Our 2009 Jetta TDI has about 5,000 miles on it so far. This afternoon it announced "Airbag Fault" and the airbag light stays lit on the gauge cluster. Is this a common problem? How dangerous could it be? Thanks.

I wonder how similar these are to the '06 cars.

My '06 has had 2 airbag faults over the last 6 months.

1) The clock spring on the drivers wheel; this appears to be moderately common.
2) The side impact airbag in the passengers seat. This was due to a manufacturing defect in a connector under the seat. VERY common and if the code pops up under warranty, VW will fix for free. My car has 80k miles, so it's out of warranty. Dealer wanted $216 for what turned out to be 1hr of my time to R&R the seat & solder 3 wires.

Not trying to scare you, just educating.

At 5k miles, it's under warranty - get it in ASAP. Then consider buying a VCDS. It's the one tool you can't live without, when you own a VW.
