Zedbra,

Don't give up the hope on this coolant heater idea yet. Sorry, I totally forgot to mention this to you. Apparently this is available thru Canadian VW dealers only. I hate to hear you having trouble starting your car and get frozen cold this winter.

The installation is pretty straight forward.

Oh that looks interesting. I will look into ordering one of these soon. For now, I am going to try the heater. I just looked in the car to mount the heater and the passenger floor is wet (frozen now too). What would cause that? Do I have a plugged drain?

Coolant heater for sure. The above device is easy to install, but you need a perfectly smooth flat surface. I guess the only place I can think of, it would be the steel oil pan. If you have the Al. oil pan, then it won't do you any good. It only locally heats up the oil, and nothing else.
Why coolant heater as my choice, because it heats up the followings, coolant in the cyl. head, oil in the OHE, coolant in the heater core. Since they're all in series connection, so it's like killing those birds with one stone type of deal. What this means, is that easier start up in very cold weather since the cyl.head is warmer courtesy of warmer coolant. Coolant in the OHE is warmer therefore oil is warmer thus oil flows quicker to the valvetrain, turbo bearing etc. Lastly the interior cabin also gets warmer quicker. It's a win-win situation. The down side is that it's not a PAP type installation.

I forgot that another place you can put the heat magnet would be the engine block. It's made of cast iron so it should stick
Excellent post! and good points... I think you have sold me on a real coolant heater... have you ever tried used car sales? I think you would do well! lol

some pics here of mine showing where you mount the frost heater for the PD autotrans - mounts to a preexisting threaded hole above the oil pan.

edit - i also have a pd150 oil cooler, so my install is a bit different but the location for the heater should be the same. just made my own little L bracket to mount it onto/above the oil pan.
Thanks for the pics! I wondered if there was room down there - I tried tucking the heater past the hoses from up top, but gave up on that idea realizing I would need to work from the bottom to connect everything. I would need a hoist and some time to figure this out.

Do you happen to know what hoses you used?

well, my setup is totally different since i have the pd150 oil cooler - inlet/outlets face upwards rather than sideways as well as the dieselgeek oil cooler which makes that somewhat tricky. for me, i used a couple of long straight hoses that i could snake around stuff. i don't remember offhand what hoses you would need, but they would be weird lookin ;) you could perhaps rotate the oil cooler to make the hosing easier, but it might be best just to buy the pre-made kit. there's enough room to get under there if you get the car up on ramps, blocks, etc. it is tricky to get it to fit if you custom make a bracket, since it's a tight fit, especially if you have a metal skidplate. the bracket i used was only about 1" x 1".
