So, as the title implies, I have a good idea now why Volkswagen never made a roof rack for the Beetle.

So here it is mocked up with a bike rack and cross bars. Note the red strap in case the feet pop loose (already happened several times).

First, if you have a sun roof, DON'T OPEN IT!

Second, don't put anything long on it. Like even a normal bike rack.

So back to the drawing board. I don't like current hitch offerings from Curt/Drawtight/etc. That means a custom hitch is in the planning stages. I'll post up the process and results if my "honey do" list ever lets me.

I've been looking at ideas for our '14 Beetle for a while, but put it on hold until 6/21. The best (read strongest/safest) was to use Rhino Rack (or Thule/Yakima) tracks permanently mounted just inside the roofline ridges using Riv Nuts, and then use their track mount feet to carry whatever bar and carriers you want. It seems drastic, but if they are painted to match they wouldn't stick out too much.
