Hi,

I have owned this golf since around October last year and it has been trouble ever since. I am at a real loss as what to do as mechanics have told me they have no clue without throwing parts on and seeing if it still cuts out. Which I don't want to do as I will be paying bills without guarantee of fixing it. I a, hoping somebody here has had this issue and fixed it, as most other posts nobody has said if they managed to find the fix in the end.

My issue is that it will drive fine going back and forth from my work which is around a 5 mile round trip in 30mph zones. But if I try to take it on a long journey it will most likely cut out. Then after a few attempts of cranking and pumping the pedal, it will fire back up again and be fine for that journey.

It doesn't do it on every fair distance drive or for example, I may be able to make it to Leicester which is 15 miles away but will break down on the way back, or not at all but another time it will.

I can tell when it will break down as the car has A LOT LESS POWER on that drive and when accelerating the engine like shudders and will really struggle to accelerate. Occasionally it won't start either? Not sure if these are the same issues, I assume so.

I took it to the garage when it first did it as I have AA BRC cover and they changed the glowplugs which of course didn't fix it. I have since changed the oil, replaced all filters including fuel filter. Cleaned the intake manifold flap & EGR valve and just tried to do a few things to make it a bit healthier in general.

It has 1 fault code which is the steering control column I think its called which is why my cruise control doesn't work. A VW specialist that came out to me when I rang the AA said that it could be the ignition switch? Other people suggested the injector wiring but apparently, my specific MK doesn't have that engine?

I have more info on exactly what happens when it breaks down and videos of me trying to start it as I wasn't sure if that would help indicate what's wrong. I know this is a long post but I am now in a situation where I don't want to spend more money if it won't fix it as I have recently spent £600 on new engine mounts as 2 snapped from cam belt bolts not being tight enough from whoever changed it before I had it.

Appreciate it if anyone can give some advice other than scrap it lol!
