Ryan, do you know of any 6-speed conversion that would work in a 1Z or AHU B4V passat?

The 02S will work but even the longest is only marginally longer.

02M can be made to fit with custom mounts and shafts!

Anybody in the US doing the 5 - 6 spd conv want to sell the 5-spd stuff?

I am interested in an auto to 5-spd conversion. The OP says that somebody going from 5 to 6 speed can sell the 5 speed. If somebody is selling a 5-speed set-up, I'm interested. Cash in hand.

Revised the "howto" to include wiring instructions for VSS on a tiptronic to manual swap. Did some house keeping on the wiring instructions to hopefully clarify them. Made it easier to find the VCDS coding instructions on page 21 and 26. Hope that helps.

AFAIK not one of my conversions has suffered issues with the forks, when fitting an LSD we normally weld bolts instead of the rivets.

I wasn't trying to imply anyone had any issues, but my post was more so aimed for those that have power upgrades that might warrant upgraded shift forks and also for those out there that like to drive aggressively and push their car, which usually goes hand in hand.

Yeah i know, sorry if it seemed like i took it the wrong way, just saying my part. Just because a company makes a product, doesn't mean its needed. Take K&N for example.....

I believe they are from TDI's. I did the auto to 6spd swap in my '02 MK4 and LOVE IT!!

These are from euro TDi's, the vr6 box wont bolt up to 4 cylinder engine.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who has put their input in on the 6 speed swap, I (and I'm sure a lot of others) have learned a great deal from all of you.

I just bought an 02 jetta TDI with 222k miles on it (got a good deal) and recently learned that it has the dreaded 01m transmission and the P0740 code is on (now I know why I got a good deal). Overall it still shifts fairly well, no surging, and it hunts maybe a little between 3rd and 4th.

My thoughts of pouring money into a very well used transmission seems not the best option and I would be better off redirecting my money toward a different option. So, I am now considering doing a 5 or 6 speed swap and have a few questions:

(Let me preface my questions with the fact that I'm new to the forums and TDI's in general)

1. Were the 6 speed transmissions (which I believe are coded 02m) for the mk4's available in the US? Or were they only an option in the Euro TDI's?

2. Would a transmission from a mk5 (2006) work in my mk4 with/without major modifications?
2a. If so, would the engine type matter for installation, I5 or TDI?

3. I am a little confused about the transmission type codes, their applications, and model years that they were available. Is there a thread or something in the FAQ? (I couldn't find anything, but that doesn't mean its not out there.) For example, I believe I figured out (please correct me if I am wrong) that 01m is the 4 speed auto trans available in the mk4 series cars. A listing of these codes, or the most common ones would be extrememly helpful for me to determine what transmissions are compatible with my car to do a swap.

Thanks again in advance for the input.

1. The 02M was available in the US but not the diesel geared versions. They are plentiful in Europe.
2. Ryan probably knows the answer to this one.
3. Look to the first page of this thread concerning coding with the 02M and here under 02J the those codes.

A Mk5 box wont workin a Mk4 due to the lack of speed sensor!

5 cylinder's are a different bolt pattern.

Gents,

Thanks again for all of the info.

A few more questions.

1. Boertje, in your response, you mentioned the phrase "but not the diesel geared versions." I guess that means that the trans from any gasser (1.8t, 2.0 or VR6) will not work in a TDI?
1a. If not, why?
2. Ryan, for the mk5, you're saying me drilling the hole in the side of my mk5 trans and siliconing the speed sensor into it wasn't a good idea? Uh oh. LOL.

It's not that they won't work, but the gearing is wrong for the diesel. Your diesel engine will be whining going 70 mph with a gasser trans.

Thanks Jack.

a VR6 box wont fit, the bellhousing is different. I've sold quite a few 6 speeds to guys who have fitted Gasser boxes who have regretted it.

Silicone and sensors dont normally mix! haha

Updated the "howto" by adding a table of contents and clarifying some things, adding the bolts required list, and cleaning up the VCDS area.

Doing my obligatory trip to CA. Got 48.4 mpg on winter fuel and in some places drove 80mph for 2 hours straight in the high desert. Man, it's a dream to see about 2350 rpm at that speed.

Its all good Jack, how much would I have to pay you to go back to a 5 Speed?

BTW - You will need to make that trip again in late June/Early July. Me and Scott are coming to California (Newport Beach) with our partners, would be nice to meet up with you and some other guys! Also need help arranging a hire car if poss.

Cheers!
