Axel leaking at trans

The seal on my pass side is leaking the transmission seal not axel what should i look for and can it be changed without the transmission removed .5 speed standard transmission . thanks

The seal is definitely changeable with the trans in. Pretty easy actually, unfortunately you must remove the axle. Then you remove the flange and replace the seal.
I jacked mine up and didn't lose fluid in the process.

Alot of times, the seal goes bad

Then the oil level drops, and the bearing goes bad right after that

I did this exact repair on my '03 Jetta last fall. I removed the axle, but not the transmission. Suggestion: The right flange seal sits in a metal cup (flange). you can buy just the seal, or a seal and cup set. Unless the cup/flange is damaged, you can replace just the seal, which is a LOT easier. The cup is difficult to remove; I used a cold chisel and 3# sledge to drive in one side until it collapsed and was loose enough to remove -- all while being ultra careful not to nick the aluminum transmission housing.
