Hi my 2000 Golf has 580,000km on the original manual transmission. Been having more and more trouble shifting lately. Can anyone recommend a good rebuild kit? Especially tough to get into first gear.
Difficult shifting.

New shifter bushings.

When I bought my 00 it had 297k miles and first gear was almost impossible, changed to some gear 300 and it shifts like new.
But if you have slop in the shifter then you need bushings

I second, third, and fourth everyone that says change the fluid to a quality synchromesh. Cheapest and easiest start and it solved my shifting woes

Agreed, change your tranny fluid. However I have always stuck with OEM G050 fluid and never had a problem. Heard good things about Penzoil Synchromesh though.

Will change the fluid for sure guys. I think I did it once only! I think I will do the bushings to. They are definitely worn. Thanks for the link to the complete bushing set.

If you pull the shift boot up you can see one bushing, driver's side, it's where the first gear getter goes, that'll give you an idea what the rest look like

Interesting. My car has been having trouble with 1st for years. I figured it was just worn out but I'll give this a try.
