I looked for a thread to add this to but couldn't find it.

2014 TDI 145k getting timing belt changed. wont go to dealer, not enough time space to do it myself.

found a recommended mech from the TDI list, says 925+tax for the whole job. Is that in the correct ball park? Dealer wants $1200.00+. I've never used this mech but I have a good feeling about them and reviews are good.

Thanks for any input.

From Shop: Complete timing belt service including the following OES Genuine VW/OEM installed parts: timing belt, timing belt tensioner, small top roller, small lower roller, large upper roller, water pump (upgraded with metal impeller/Geba made in Germany), serpentine belt, VW specific coolant, associated hardware, and labor: $925 + tax (Allow 7 hours)

Yes, that's reasonable. The dealership likely wouldn't replace the water pump and possibly other parts in addition to charging $275 more.

I charge about $650 with all the parts listed. $925 doesn't sound super high considering your location.

$925 is possibly about right, havent priced a '14 yet, but $650 to $750 for prior years from a trusted mechanic is good, and $925 is still much less than a dealer, and for these prices you will get water pump, idler, pulleys, belts, etc.

I did mine myself. I bought a crankshaft tool on Amazon ($25). The parts at VW in Lethbridge were around the $700 mark if I remember correctly. There are several videos on YouTube that I watched and I also downloaded the instructions from www.myturbodiesel.com. It took me about six hours never having done a 2.0L before. The next one I'll be able to do in 3-4 hours.

There is a shortcut well worth looking into as you don't need to remove the motor mount. It also saves the cost of the torque to yield bolts.

Get a kit on rockauto (continental with metal water pump) , buy the tool and do it yourself , it will turn around 400$ .
