So with some break from work figure now would be good time to post a quick ~8 month update on the '12 in my signature - its a little under 8 months but close enough.
Stats:
2012 JSW - Pano and 17" wheel package, DSG. VW CPO
Purchased - 4/6/2019
Mileage - 65,667
Purchase price - $9500 (OTD $10,900)
Current mileage - 69,920
Warranty cost to date - $50
Maintenance cost to date - $105
Repairs & Maint:
Warranty repairs: $50 deductible
1) Pano sunshade replacement
2) A/C compressor RCV valve replacement
3) Driver dash vent replaced (broken adjusting tab).
Maintenance: $105
Oil change per trip computer. Selling dealer provided invoice showing all the maintenance performed during CPO process which showed oil change so this may have not been needed. I erred on the side of caution and had the oil changed anyways.
Fuel Economy:
Lifetime average per Fuelly - 24.3 MPG
Best MPG per Fuelly - 32.9 MPG (road trip but we were running ~85 MPH)
My commute is awful average is in the dumps mainly because of my commute and I have only had it on one road trip. Depending on the route I take it is anywhere from 3.1 to 4.8 miles to/from work that can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour and involves 12-16 stoplights each way with speed limits not exceeding 40 MPH and typically 35 MPH.
Coming from a MB C300 RWD running E85 that only averaged ~11-12 MPG in same conditions and my MB E350 4Matic running premium that only averaged 13-14 MPG in same conditions I am quite happy with my measly 24 MPG.
Ride and Drive:
We all know how these ride and drive. Will say the 16" wheels on the '11 in my signature does make a big difference in smoothing out the bumps/ruts/manholes/etc.
I am a huge fan of the DSG. I will say the shift smoothness easily beats any traditional automatic, pretty much imperceptible shifts. The only thing I am not a fan of is the takeoff delay from a stop while it feathers the clutch engagement which I have adapted to during point and shoot maneuvers by starting my release brake and hit the gas ~ ½ second sooner than I would in any other car. The downshifting on braking can be a bit abrupt too especially if you are braking from speed down a moderate hill where it will downshift to have the engine singing along at 3k RPM - had a colleague riding with me to lunch ask me what was wrong with my car when my car did this.
Issues:
1) Creaking pano roof and rattling cargo cover. Have treated the pano roof seals with Sonax rubber treatment twice now and the creaks have gotten ~30% better. Need to do another treatment, hoping that I can get these seals back to life. I need to find some felt to go try to isolate the cargo cover rattles - my own laziness is why this has not been addressed.
2) Struts or some bushing in the front end creak/squeak like crazy once temps drop to ~40 or below. Doubt a VW dealer will even address this under CPO so just need to plan on a suspension refresh (see below) at some point.
Overall:
I am 100% pleased with this car and it reminds me of why this is my 4th VW - even on my off days I want to just lounge around I have this desire to go drive, my prior Mercedes could stay parked for days and I didn't care one bit.
Only minor issues remain which is pretty admirable considering the car is 8+ years old, the CPO issues were noted at purchase but selling dealer pushed to have it covered under CPO warranty and they would waive the $50, I had a sour taste in my mouth with selling dealer while trying to schedule the repairs so I just ate the $50 and took it to a better dealer who did excellent work.
Future:
I have this itch to turn my '12 into a GTD - well minus any engine upgrade and I would forego the seats too. Just thinking GTI suspension, steering wheel, wheels, front bumper and headlights - have not looked into how hard it would be to get a GTD grill from EU but that would be in the cards too.
I love this car and am looking forward to many more years with it.
