My dad's car has decided to have more issues again. Looking back at old VCDS reads on the car, I have found these codes on reads from 100K miles ago, but he never had any "no start" issues until recently. I will say that on 3 or 4 occasions over the last 100K miles, while driving, he has had short instances happen where he states "all the lights in the dash came on" for 5-30 seconds. The tach and speedometer flipped out too and then went back to normal after those few seconds. The car didn't stop running, he just kept driving and it resolved itself. Those instances were far and few between and I could never get it to happen to me. The car is from and lives in Northern Alabama. Not near the beach, and we rarely see snow or salt. Corrosion is not something we generally see on cars that have lived their lives in this area. The car has no rust and I have never found any corroded connections. The main grounds under the battery have been checked numerous times over the years and they have always been tight and clean. Same with the ones under the cowl where the ECM/TCM live. There is no corrosion on the battery terminals and the battery fuse panel was replaced awhile back due to the alternator wire having lots of resistance and melting the battery fuse panel. Both the fuse panel and alternator wire were replaced with factory replacements. The starter and alternator have been replaced since we have had the car as well. The car did have the TCM go bad about 50K miles ago and it was replaced with a used one (with matching numbers) and it has worked fine ever since. The TCM harness checked out. I have found no damaged wires, I have never found where anyone has done exploratory surgery on the wires to bring them into question. If some thing is wrong with a wire, it would be due to age or due to failure from resistance or a failed component. I've had cars where the wiring harness has been massacred by people poking a zillion holes in them with test lights, splices, harnesses unwrapped, little bits of butt connectors and electrical tape everywhere and every other atrocity you could imagine, but I can say that is not the case with this car.
The car had failed to start the last 3 mornings causing dad to have to take his much less fuel efficient truck to work. This is not the first time it has failed to start, it has done that a couple times in the last couple months, but he would try again for a few minutes, it would eventually start and he would go about his day. The first two mornings he stated he tried off and on for over 10 minutes trying to get it to start before giving up. This morning it didn't start in a couple tries and he just left in the truck. Both of the first days I was able to go to his house later in the day and it fired right up for me both times. Today, I came over to his house in less than 30 minutes of him leaving for work. I was able to find the car still in a no start condition so that I could better see the problem. The no start isn't due to temperature. It seems to not be cranking in the morning at 70 degrees Fahrenheit and then cranking at 75F. We are still having record breaking temperatures for October. It has been around 100F the last few days. The car is definitely not "cold" lol... I do understand that sensors can tell the car it's cold, but the symptoms show that it is something more complicated than that unfortunately. Typically, to my understanding, when you have a immobilizer issue, the "car with a key under it symbol" will begin flashing as soon as you put the key in the switch. It will flash while cranking and continue to flash once you have stopped trying to crank the car. With my dad's car, I have found that when you turn the ignition on, the immobilizer symbol comes up for a couple seconds, goes off (as it normally should) and never comes back on again until you turn the switch completely off and back on again. The odd lights in the dash are the "ABS" light and the "Cruise" light. They come on, stay on and erratically flash. The cruise light even comes on even though the cruise is turned to "off". The shift pattern for the automatic trans is also not showing up. The airbag light seems to come on sometimes as well.
Here is a video of what I found when it was refusing to start. Typical immobilizer type no start, starts and dies 2 seconds later. Battery is strong and wizzes the engine over easily.

Here is a pull of the codes with VCDS:
As you can see I have a:
"18058 - Powertrain Data Bus
P1650 - 35-10 - Missing Message from Instrument Cluster - Intermittent"
But no
"17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
P1570 - 35-00 - "
I don't get that until the 3rd time I pull the codes (and 2 times erasing them).
We can also see I get:
"01176 - Key
07-10 - Signal too Low - Intermittent"
We have two normal keys and a valet key for this car. This happens with all three keys and when the car gets over it's "No Start" condition, all 3 keys crank the car without issue.
We've got:
"01312 - Powertrain Data Bus
37-10 - Faulty - Intermittent"
In both "Instruments" and "CAN Gateway", but no codes in the "ABS" section even though that was the light doing all the flashing???
So I cleared the codes and this is the hard faults that came back
So our:
"18058 - Powertrain Data Bus
P1650 - 35-10 - Missing Message from Instrument Cluster - Intermittent"
Didn't go away and:
"01312 - Powertrain Data Bus
37-10 - Faulty - Intermittent"
Came back under "Instruments" and "CAN Gateway".
Still no:
"17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
P1570 - 35-00 - "
I tried cranking the car a few more times, cycled the key and read the codes again.
Ok, so finally, it shows up:
"17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
P1570 - 35-00 -"
Remember, I'm still not getting any "flashing" immobilizer light.
We're still getting:
"18058 - Powertrain Data Bus
P1650 - 35-10 - Missing Message from Instrument Cluster -"
And still getting:
"01312 - Powertrain Data Bus
37-10 - Faulty - Intermittent"
Under "Instruments" and "CAN Gateway".
We are also now getting:
"01321 - Control Module for Airbags (J234)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent
01315 - Transmission Control Module
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
Under both "Instruments" and "CAN Gateway", but nothing under "Auto Trans" and the Airbag controller does not appear to be communicating at all.
Every time I read or clear the codes, I keep getting this
So I erase the codes again, try to start, same thing, read the codes again:
I get the same stuff as last time with the exception of:
"01321 - Control Module for Airbags (J234)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent
01315 - Transmission Control Module
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
This is no longer there.
I decide I fooled with it enough this am, I'll come back around lunch and see if it will start. I cycle the key and notice that the "ABS" and "Cruise" light are no longer staying on in the dash. I turn the key over and the car cranks and runs. Lights are back to normal. The glow plug flashes and the engine light is on, but that is common due to a hard fault about the injection pump. The injection pump needs replaced but dad isn't willing to spend the money as long as it will run.
So I read the codes again since it is now running.
The original codes came back under engine and we added a couple glow plug faults:
"17055 - Cylinder 1 Glow Plug Circuit (Q10)
P0671 - 35-00 - Electrical Fault
17058 - Cylinder 4 Glow Plug Circuit (Q13)
P0674 - 35-00 - Electrical Fault"
The Airbag Controller finally decides to communicate, but it gives a fault:
"01299 - Diagnostic Interface for Data Bus (J533)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
The Trans fault comes back under "Instruments" and "CAN Gateway":
"01315 - Transmission Control Module
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
But still no code under the "Auto Trans" and now that we got communication with the Air Bag Controller, we did NOT get:
""01321 - Control Module for Airbags (J234)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
So now that the car is running, I erased the codes again.
All codes went away except for the one about the Injection Pump which is normal. It has been there for 80K+ miles of driving.
I take the car on a approximate 16 mile drive around town, return home and read the codes again.
All codes stay gone except for a common injection pump code that always comes up after erasing the codes and running the car a bit and the glow plug codes return.
"17055 - Cylinder 1 Glow Plug Circuit (Q10)
P0671 - 35-10 - Electrical Fault - Intermittent
17058 - Cylinder 4 Glow Plug Circuit (Q13)
P0674 - 35-10 - Electrical Fault - Intermittent
17656 - Start of Injection Timing Regulation
P1248 - 35-00 - Control Deviation"
I can't say I'm familiar with having these codes in the past. All 4 glow plugs were replaced a couple years ago. The harness was in good shape. We only have about 3 months out of the year where it is below 40F in the morning so the glow plugs don't get a ton of use.
Here is a short video of the instrument cluster after the car has returned to starting and the codes have been cleared.
https://youtu.be/GubbyOmurMg
Notice how the shift pattern returned. the ABS and Cruise light are not longer stying on or flashing erratically. The lights come on and go off as they should.
So in short, the car choses to freak out and without any rhyme or reason, choses to return to normal.
No wires were wiggled, nothing was pulled on, removed or changed. I wouldn't even have to erase the codes. Had I showed up later in the day, it would have just started and showed me no evidence of what happened other than what codes were left behind in the control modules.
Something I forgot to mention, this car rarely gets washed and we are in the middle of a drought. It hasn't rained here in twice in 3 months. I doubt any connector or module has water in it.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

"17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
P1570 - 35-00 -"
Remember, I'm still not getting any "flashing" immobilizer light.
We're still getting:
"18058 - Powertrain Data Bus
P1650 - 35-10 - Missing Message from Instrument Cluster -"
And still getting:
"01312 - Powertrain Data Bus
37-10 - Faulty - Intermittent"
Under "Instruments" and "CAN Gateway".
We are also now getting:
"01321 - Control Module for Airbags (J234)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent
01315 - Transmission Control Module
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
Under both "Instruments" and "CAN Gateway", but nothing under "Auto Trans" and the Airbag controller does not appear to be communicating at all.
Every time I read or clear the codes, I keep getting this
So I erase the codes again, try to start, same thing, read the codes again:

This is no longer there.
I decide I fooled with it enough this am, I'll come back around lunch and see if it will start. I cycle the key and notice that the "ABS" and "Cruise" light are no longer staying on in the dash. I turn the key over and the car cranks and runs. Lights are back to normal. The glow plug flashes and the engine light is on, but that is common due to a hard fault about the injection pump. The injection pump needs replaced but dad isn't willing to spend the money as long as it will run.
So I read the codes again since it is now running.

The Airbag Controller finally decides to communicate, but it gives a fault:
"01299 - Diagnostic Interface for Data Bus (J533)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
The Trans fault comes back under "Instruments" and "CAN Gateway":
"01315 - Transmission Control Module
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
But still no code under the "Auto Trans" and now that we got communication with the Air Bag Controller, we did NOT get:
""01321 - Control Module for Airbags (J234)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent"
So now that the car is running, I erased the codes again.
