They say it's plug and play on the newer cars (2010-2014), but to me it didn't ever look like a trivial DIY to get it right. My RNS-510 came in the car and I love it. I guess it is slow, but I still think it's wonderful.

Jellowsub: Full disclosure, I have an RNS-510C for sale, and I did the swap from RCD-510 to RNS-510 in my '14 JSW myself. Its not difficult, and there are step by step instructions available on the forums. It is plug and play, realize that you must disconnect the factory electronic compass (magnetometer) if your car is so equipped (mine was). You will also need to do some simple coding via VCDS.

Part of my quest to find the right JSW is if, for example any non rns315 models had the "highline" instument panel or just the non highline

Ill go back and read on the "C" model. Do you know if that has voice reconition?

What $ are you wanting? What year, model and condition is it in?

Thanks

I thought all the diesel VWs had highline clusters 2009-2014, although he 2009 Jetta had a red cluster that was from the MK5. Then in 2010 everyone got the white MK6 cluster.

My '11 Golf had an RCD510 and I swapped to an RNS510.
Was plug and play. Just had to use VAGCOM to tell the car it had a GPS unit so it would display the street and directions in the cluster. Also need to remove your compass module. Mine was in the hatch.

I've learned your right about them all having highline. Good to know, I'm learning on the fly

If I bought a (lets say) 2011 TDI JSW with the (non) GPS unit. If I were to swap in a 2012 or up RNS510 with voice command... I would have to remove compass module, add Bluetooth module, and ad microphone if the 2011 JSW was not Bluetooth optioned (were some non BT anyway?) and then code it?

Anything else?

I'm not an expert at all, but I remember a lot of noise about the bluetooth integration with certain years and options on the cars. My car was simple to fix, the 9W2 bluetooth box was under the passenger seat and all I had to do was plug in a better 9W7 box that was readily available at the time for about $200 as I recall. And after a time, after many complaints and I guess a court ruling, VW offered a less than stellar upgrade (from what I heard), or they gave us cash if we already did the upgrade ourselves. I got a check that paid for my 9W7 upgrade!

Then there was also a time when bluetooth came in the radio, not under the seat. Then guys were having to add the harness to add the bluetooth if they upgraded the radio. I checked the link below quickly, and it looks like maybe bluetooth in the radio was only with the 315 nav unit. Maybe it was still under the seat in other cars. The facts at the link indicate that the 9W7 came standard on the car in 2013. Correction, 2011!.

Below is a link with facts about the different years. They mention bluetooth modules, but it might take some digging using the links at the link to find all the information you need.
