My 2004 Passat is sluggish and jerks like it's going to stall (engine and ESP light show on the dash) when I first start it up in the morning. I drive less than 1km, stop and start the car, and voila...ESP light goes away, and the car drives fine - I've driven on the autobahn at speeds up to 190kph afterwards with zero issues. And here's the kicker: the engine light goes away later in the day. Does anyone have any idea as to what may be the issue? Thanks!

Probably emissions related. Scan for the code
I have similar issues with various cars. Codes that clear them selves usually are emissions type.
Any auto store will let you scan for codes for free. Well at least here in the states.
Any code reader will get you started.
