no start

2006 Jetta TDI, 297,xxx miles 5 speed

I drove the car car yesterday for 150+ miles. It ran well.
Today I drove the car for 6 minutes, tried to restart 5 minutes later and it acted as if it had a dead battery. I swapped in a spare battery, no diffference.
I wanted to get the car started so I could measure the running voltage generated by the alternator. I will have both batteries tested tomorrow.

Can you describe what you mean by it acted like it had a dead battery?

Did you get any lights on the dash?

Did the starter click rapidly when trying to start?

Did you check through situation #11 in the no start thread?

Sorry, I missed some details.

I do get dash lights when I turn the key to the first position and I see the headlights come on when I flash the hi-beams. However, when I turn the key to activate the starter nothing happens. No noise, nothing.

I will review the no start thread.

One common problem when all the dash lights come on and the starter will not engage is the little short thick copper wire that runs from the solenoid to the starter itself. That wire goes bad and the starter either needs rebuilding or replacement. Go through the thread first.

The 2006 cars have an issue with wires rubbing inside the harness. The loom needs to be opened up and inspected. Fortunately, there are some specific areas that have the problem such as near the starter.

It also wouldn't hurt to rule out the clutch safety switch. Also, lean the grounds under the air box and battery tray. Mine didn't look too dirty, but cleaning them up solved my electrical issue. It's also easy to inspect the harness that Whitedog mentions when removing those parts.

I had a similar situation last year with the wife's '05.5, the pinion gear on the Bendix, seized in position (would not rotate or retract) and fried the starter motor.

Today I was able to get under the car and inspected the little short thick copper wire that runs from the solenoid to the starter itself. There was a definite break in that braided copper cable. I pulled the starter today. Replacement is due in on Thursday 10.19.2017.

I picked up my replacement starter. Unfortunately the replacement starter has a square plug for the single wire connection. My original starter has a round/oblong plug.

I did a lot of searching on the internet concerning my starter.
Every starter for a 2006 Jetta TDI manual trans I found shows the square plug.
Every starter for a 2006 Jetta TDI Auto trans I found shows the round plug.

Just for grins I ordered a starter for a Auto trans. It did have the round/oblong plug, but the bolt pattern and the solenoid location relative to the starter is different.

Any help would be appreciated

If the wire terminal is the same, you should be able to find the correct shaped connector and swap connectors.

is the lead in the square/round plug a positive or negative?

VW sells a connector that connects the square connector on the starter to the round connector on the harness.
