Adding a chip to a 2015 Passat TDI better mileage

You guys both have manual transmissions - my understanding is that the gearing is a little taller on MT cars than the DSG cars. At least the 2012/13 versions. So I'm not shocked that you can do better MPG's.

I feel like my car could use another gear or two on the highway because the engine is spinning so fast (2000+ rpm at highway speeds). My BMW is turning at ~1650 rpm at 80 mph, just ticking over...

12-14 DSG are about 2-300 RPM shorter gearing than a 6MT, and that will affect MPG let alone the small parasitic loss of a DSG vs manual just doesn't help the MPGs regardless of what the EPA numbers are.
