Today (08/14/2017), my 2012 Jetta TDI (2.0) Generation 1 has been modified by installation of:

*Exhaust Flap
*O2 Sensor
*NOX Cat
*ERG Filter
*Control Box
*Lubricant

New Fuel Economy revised by VW provided today by dealer who performed modification: 32 mpg (City)/37 mpg (Hwy)

MPG Prior to modification: 52mpg
MPG After modification: 48.7mpg

Other: Nothing difference in performance noted, but the vehicle is a bit louder than prior to modification.

Due to my mileage, I will get $5,100.00 from VW. Does anyone know how long it takes to get the $350.00 from Bosch. I called them, but the representatives are clueless.

Did you have any MIL/CEL codes?

I didn’t think the EGR was part of the list (but am assuming if those are needing replaced they will since it’s now covered by your extended warranty)

from the first hint of a fix, the low pressure EGR filter was part of the fix, (along with flap, NOX cat, and software update)

for the 2009 model year, the NOX cat is welded to the DPF, so a new DPF comes with the fix.

for my appointment (tomorrow) there is the fix, and also two recalls, one is for the O2 sensor and an intake box flap.

Keith, do you have (and willing to share) a scan or photo of the paperwork? I am wondering if they did a separate recall along with the emissions fix.

In addition, they did a software update. DSG was not touched. Time for repair: 3.5 hours.

I will do my best to scan the paperwork tomorrow.

Dropped my Golf off at Ancira VW in San Antonio at 8 AM this morning. I had the appointment set up about a week and a half ago. Today at 2PM I called to inquire about my TDI and was told that it was waiting for an O2 sensor to arrive and that would most likely be there tomorrow. After I talked with my service rep some more I found out that in addition to the 23U3 Emissions recall, on August 11 VW initiated a recall 24CV = Inlet Air Box/Snow Flap/O2 sensor. Read the description of this recall on VW's website and found out that the hot air inlet to the air box (accordion pipe connects to it) can sometimes stick open. Once they update this flap with a new one, if the values that the stock O2 sensor see's are not within spec, then they must replace the O2 sensor with an updated one. Apparently, this dealer did not have enough of those in stock. So the 2-3 hours that VW quoted up for 2010-2014 TDI's may be a bit off. Service rep said the part should arrive tomorrow. I had no CEL's and the car is in top working order so I don't forsee any additional delays due to other parts needing to be replaced. I inquired about the loaner I was promised by VW and of course, the dealer "doesn't have any loaners available". I'm thinking, "You have an entire lot of loaners. Sign one out for a 24hr test drive." I've done this at one other dealer in Austin. Simple paperwork. Anyways, they set me up with a rental from Enterprise. A tin can, I mean Hyundai Accent without cruise control. Oh the humanity! I will update The Club with information after I get my car back hopefully tomorrow.

Dropped car off last night. Loaner turned out to be an Enterprise car. Spent 1.5 hours between time I pulled in to dealership and had keys in hand to drive off. Late this morning dealer called and claims my 2009 needs a new glow plug harness as part of the emissions repair and it is being overnighted so keep the "loaner" for another day. So far, not exactly fluid.

my car also is still in the shop. waiting for glow plug controller to be shipped in.

the service poc claims they needed to see the serial number on the parts installed on the car to determine if this part is needed.

they swapped me a loaner for the car Tuesday at 0730. going on Friday.

So from what I am seeing here is that the VW dealerships are fixing items on your cars that fall under this new warranty amiright? For instance the glow plug controller.

I think the glow plug controller is not automatic, for every 2009.

but correct, this is part of the emissions update, not a separate repair.

My car is still at the dealer. They didn't get the O2 sensor in until around noon on Friday. I was told that it would likely be done by close of business (7pm) so I headed to the dealer in the afternoon. Around 5:30PM my service rep tells me they are just about to start on the ECU flash and that will take longer than the service department is open today. They are closed on the weekend so I will have to wait until Monday. They did however put me in a new Passat so I could ditch the rental. I asked to talk to the service manager/shop foreman just to figure out why nothing else was done to the car from 8 AM Wednesday 8/16 when I dropped it off until Friday at noon when they got an O2 sensor? The shop foreman told me that VW is very specific in the workflow of how this is to be carried out. Apparently no work can be done on the car until all parts are there. Also they have to take photographs of the work as it proceeds and VW has to verify that it is in accordance with their stipulations. Finally, the ECU flash is the last thing they can perform before sending the car out the door. Also, he said as fixes have been happening VW has been asking the dealerships to stop and await further instructions while VW "tweaks" the ECU reflash. Hope everyone else's fix goes much smoother than mine has thus far.

Got the car back this afternoon! First impressions: The car is the same as it was before the modification. Sounds the same, pulls the same. On my normal 37 mile drive home from work (98% Freeway/Interstate) I got 46 mpg which is what I usually get on that drive at that time of day. Overall, I'm happy.

I did scan the car with VAGcom before I did the modification and scanned it again today when I got home. There are no check engine lights on btw. One thing I noted though was that there were stored "malfunctions" in the Autoscan post-modification. I think most of these are due to the battery probably being drained while the dealer did the ECU reflash. My voltage gage was reading pretty low while the car was running. I'm sure they just left the ignition on while the car was flashed. Here are my two scans. The first is pre-modification and the second is post-modification. Let me know your thoughts.

Finally, I did receive a new exhaust flap, EGR filter, NOx cat, and the two proof of modification stickers stuck to the underside of my hood (no sound blanket).

I think this thread should be a sticky eventually as more people receive the modification. Happy driving!

First impressions, I agree with the Beetle driver, car FEELS different. Mine is a 2009 JSW with DSG. Acceleration from start feels more delayed and the impressive on ramp accelerations at speed aren't as snappy. When you could feel the turbo kick in, it used to launch. Not as same.

Will admit it is ALL perception. Don't have scientific, but I bought a wagen with a diesel because it thrilled me to average 33-36 while being able to drive the car like I stole it. I will see what the MPG is average after awhile, but initial tank was also at 31. 2 below my worse tanks (usually summer driving, AC on, summer mix diesel). Seems like the mileage is definitely taking a hit, but could also be well within the variance between when the filler pops. I can easily add an additional .5 gallon or more, so I only trust averages across multiple tanks. Especially since I refuse to drive past half full as long as the HPFP wasn't under warranty. With Missouri weather going from 60-95 in a day, just don't trust condensation not adding water to the diesel if you give the tank too much air.

The restitution process seems real clean and easy though. Got my Chase email yesterday, submitted ACH info and Chase says should have funds in 1-3 days.

I wouldn't worry about condensation. You'll get much more accurate fuel mileage calcs. if you run the tank closer to empty.

Similar Experience

I, too, was surprised this morning when I arrived for the AEM service on my '14 Beetle TDI only to discover there was a secondary open recall as you describe. This was after I requested someone from the dealer contact me when I made the appointment online (they did not), sent an email (including a copy to the dealer GM) requesting info, and finally called and spoke with the Service Manager.

The SM told me their experience was the work required 3-4 hours, said nothing about the secondary recall. I asked for a loaner vehicle per VW and, while I sensed some objection, that wasn't an issue. Work would be completed no later than early afternoon.

This morning soon after arrival I was surprised by the dealer's saying I needed my Claim Confirmation Number and that the secondary recall would take until at least Friday to complete. The dealer informed me this is because VW doesn't allow dealers to stock the O2 sensor that is part of this secondary recall.

Nice surprise.

I'm awaiting a call from VW Customer Service.

Per the AEM booklet we're to be told at the time of scheduling the appointment of any other recall work and potential time to complete.

That's a bummer Chummy. When you do get your car back make sure that the battery is healthy. I ended up coming out to a dead battery the following day during lunch break. Pulled it and took it to Autozone where if failed the load test. Luckily I had a lot of warranty on that battery and Autozone swapped it free of charge. I think the dealers may be trying to reflash these ECU's running only on battery power. Up to a couple hours or longer if they leave them sitting. I knew something was up when I got in my car at the dealer and it was reading 12.5 volts while idling. Hope you get your car back soon!

It's also possible the dealer did something that fried your alternator. I would recommend you take a DVOM and read VDC across the battery before you start the car, and then after you start it. If the voltage is below 14.5V with the engine running (like something in the 12-13 Volt range), I would be concerned with your alternator, which will bring down you new battery again. Even on your old battery, the alternator should have been putting out something in the 13-14 Volt range with the engine running.

93celicanonv,

I appreciate the input. After I did put in the new battery and had the car up to highway speed it was putting out a consistent 13.7V-13.8V. I think the Alternator is good and the dealer really did just drain. Probably jumped it to drive it from the service bays to where I was waiting.

Best way to describe my car (2012 Jetta 6 speed) is NEUTERED...

The power to launch is noticeably reduced, It requires higher RPMs to take off from red lights as the car feels like it's about to stall using what lower RPMs before the "neuter".

Now, I'm debating on whether or not to blow away the warranty and go get a Malone Stage 2 with DPF delete, or just learn to live with the lack of power...:(

Also, fuel mileage is horrible, I've run 3 tanks so far, and where I was getting 42-45 MPG I'm now down to around 35 MPG. This is a mix of city highway driving.

I was traveling down a highway on cruise control yesterday, running +/- 73 MPH and I was watching the computer show my fuel mileage as I traveled down a relatively flat road (East Tennessee), my computer started at 38.9 MPG by the end of my trip (roughly 20 miles) it was down to 37.4 MPG. I find it extremely hard to get my mileage indicator to get over 40 MPG unless I do a lot of coasting using my clutch going downhills....

Anyway, my TDI has been neutered and is not nearly or even close to being the funny torque monster it use to be before it got neutered...

Test drive

I'm in the same place deciding--- although at this point, I'm inclined to keep my car the way it is and pass on the fix altogether.

I own a 2014 Beetle TDI that I love! While it was in the shop getting its 40k mile tune up, I decided to test drive a couple of the TDI's on the lot at the dealership that have already been modified to see if I noticed any difference.

I drove a 2015 Beetle and a 2015 Passat for comparison. Now, I'm not a mechanical genius or anything, so take that with a grain of salt, but --- I (a mere mortal with no mechanical aptitude) noticed a huge, disappointing difference.

Both of the cars I drove felt as if they had a big loss in power and general "zip." Acceleration was much less peppy than it is in my car. In general, just no dang fun.

Going to wait it out a bit, I think.

^ 2015s are likely faster vs 2014s when you look at the HP/Torque and actual numbers.
The newer shift points are likely why it "feels slower" - more likely to cruise at lower rpms for better fuel economy.
Bottom line, its not apples to apples comparison. You need to either step on the throttle more, or use Sport mode / manual shift to get it to behave like an older gen.

My take away - anyone with a gen 1 should do the buyback and pick up a new/used 2015. The value you're getting for an old car is nothing to sneeze at.

I just picked up my 09 JSW M/T today from the recall.

I think they fried my alternator and the auto parts store I coasted into agreed.

VW roadside assistance is towing it back to the dealer. Will let you all know what happens next.

Symptoms:
1) Battery light came on after a few mins of driving then went off. Happened a couple of times.
2) steering warning lamp came on
3) radio turned off
4) turn signals got slow
5) muscled the now non power steering into the auto parts store.

They had to charge the battery just to start it.

It’s coming up on 3 years old but shouldn’t be bad. Their tester didn’t indicate it was bad.

On starting, their starter and charger analyzer showed starter fine but shows 0v from the alternator.

Battery went from 12.something to 8.something in just a couple of minutes.

Oddly, revving the engine caused the voltage to DROP... super weird in my opinion.

Hope the dealer is ready to cover the alternator repair or VW covers it.

I installed this alternator myself a year ago from AutoZone and it is lifetime warranty but I don’t want to do the job myself when they fried it.

A sleazy, known to fail early Auto Bone alternator fails, and you expect the dealer to replace it?

Seriously?

More likely, the battery was just discharged more than in normal driving, and the crap alternator came apart trying to charge it . . .

Just got my 09 DSG back from my dealer today. The only thing I really noticed is off the line...very slow to react. Dealer took 3 days to do the modification and 3 recalls that were pending. I'm not too upset about the power loss as I am going to get it deleted and tuned most likely next week.

Just got my 2010 Golf TDI back from the recall. If you are someone who drives exclusively in sport mode it's totally different. Sport mode is more like D now. It used to rev to around 3000 at about 40mph, now its at 2000 at 40mph. It still has some pickup, but its completely different. People who drive in D might not notice a difference.

Check the engine bay fuse box as well! My radio wouldn't turn on and when I got home I checked the fuses and the radio fuse was missing! The dealers seem to be doing some shenanigans back there.

Help! I'm new to diesel and new to this site, and most of the abbreviations you guys use are foreign to me. The battery and alternator problems--are you all saying those happened AFTER the fix?

Also, I just made an appointment for next week to get only the CV24 recall done--the inlet air box snow flap thing. Should I anticipate the dealer not having the oxygen sensor that might be needed?

One last thing on this post: What the heck does it mean to "re-flash the ECUs"?
Sorry to be such a PIA, but inquiring minds want to know!
