throttle position sensor (2000 vw golf 1.9L TDI)

A mechanic I brought my car to said I need this part because of the error received:

00518 - Throttle Position Sensor (G69) Signal Outside Tolerances - Intermittent

I can't find the part anywhere..does anyone know where to find this? Also, any further suggestion would be great too. The mechanic that is working on it seems like he has it handled, but he does not work on TDIs primarily.

(He is working on a number of other issues with this car and at this point I'm just looking to get it fixed for now without losing too much more financially and then will take to a TDI specialist from here on out)

It's for:

Was the engine not responding when you pushed down on the accelerator pedal?

Question Matt........ has he cleared the code?

Sometimes, low current (weak battery, etc.) can throw DTCs.. simply clearing them will solve the problem. In this case, it's worth a try.

Seems the dude in the Thread said he put in a "gas pedal for $170.00." I would have to assume he meant to say an accelerator pedal for a diesel, as I do believe there is a difference. So, if you go junk yard shopping before dishing out $170.00 make sure the pick is from a TDI, not a gasser.

The engine seems to be responding. It doesn't go into Turbo or whatever that high gear around 60 mph is. Also, if the car sits too long it won't start. now the check engine light is on. I think the current in the battery is fine from what I can tell.

Mechanic is asking me to find a

1) Throttle Position Sensor, which the mechanic says is down by the gas pedal (all I can find is this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Bar-MAP-...ash=item4b1a8b53bf:g:54oAAOSwNglZ3XHQ&vxp=mtr)

2) Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor/Switch

---
Here was my SureTrack:
00518. Throttle Position Sensor (G69) Signal Outside Tolerances - Intermittent
00660. Kick down Switch or Throttle Position Sensor Not A Plausible Signal - Intermittent
00529. Engine Speed Signal Missing
00300. Thansmission Fluid Temperature Sensor (G93) No Trouble Type Recognized - Intermittent
00545. Engine - Transmission Electrical Connection Open Circuit/Short with Ground
01314. Engine Control module No Communication - Intermittent.

Thanks again for any additional help. The only reason I'm not taking it to a recommended TDI specialist right now is that this mechanic has charged me a considerable amount and is going to fix it for cheap, or nothing, if I can just find these parts for a decent price (but again, I can't seem to find them).

Sometimes one just has to write off a bad decision. Consider IF the parts that you're being commanded to locate do NOT resolve your issues, THEN what? Is this mechanic going to continue to work on the problems, cheaply? Take this car to someone who is competent to work on them. You started off with a problem related to only ONE code, now it's several. Sometimes many codes is the result of poor grounds: one would have to search around to find out what this is/means (plenty written here in these forums). A competent TDI mechanic/guru would know how to approach troubleshooting this: folks here can almost always, given enough time and sound input/feedback (meaning the person having issues is going to have to provide data, data that often requires tools that are essential for diagnostic work) help figure things out. BUT, nothing is as good as having physical access to a vehicle.

"I think the current in the battery is fine from what I can tell."

And how are you deducing this? Measuring? I don't mean to be snippy, it's just that these cars absolutely require good electrical operation: when you've got computers that should go without saying. "Guessing" is no way to troubleshoot.

What is the background of this car? What's been it's recent history?

The throttle position sensor is the pedal assembly under the driver's right foot. There is no TPS on the engine like there is in a gasser.

>>> 01314. Engine Control module No Communication - Intermittent. <<<Because of that I'm thinking that here's bigger problems afoot than a throttle position sensor. And, if there there's flakiness here then other codes can be popped up more of less randomly.

Low current due to weak battery during start-up in combo with a bad ground can throw all of those codes.

The dude needs to clear the codes and see what happens. That's the cheapest first step!

There's a possibility that the 109 Relay is acting up.
The TPS connector/plug may be losing contact (unplug, inspect, and re-plug).

You mention something about that high gear it goes into around 60 mph........... is your car an Automatic? If so, are there any DTCs related to the auto tranny?

Andy, yes, the battery voltage/capacity need to be fully checked. I really hate this "it appears OK" types of assumptions.

PO, could you be a little less coy about where you are located? All this stuff matters. AND, some history on the car would help as well!

Thanks for the replies. Just need help..not feeling I have an attitude. Just don't know what I'm doing. The car is an automatic and it lives in Los Angeles.

I guess I'll just have to bring it somewhere else it seems. I have no idea where to get these parts anyway. Again, thanks everybody for the help. I don't know how to clear codes and would assume the mechanic brought it to would've at least known how to do this, but maybe he doesn't know there first thing about these TDIs.

When your TPS was crapped did it also generate several/the errors like with the OP's car?

Yes , it threw a bunch of codes . Changed some other parts , but it kept throwing codes until we changed the t.p.a.
