If the best they can do is to rival gasoline cars they are not doing doing something right.

Oh, I think they are very serious competition to VW as well.
In my experience, honda customer service is head and shoulders above VW.

Based on the fact that there is both a VW and a Honda parked in my garage, what you've said is absolutely true. I wouldn't hesitate to jump into a diesel Honda.

Guess what I bumped into at the mall today:

A 2007 Honda Accord Wagon 2.2L i-CTDi Diesel

I can't say I really care for the rear styling of that thing... reminds me of the old Camry wagons a bit. But... I've never been a wagon fan anyway so no big deal.

If Acura TSX sedan (Euro Accord) would have the CTDI in the US. I would seriously consider it.

If that car - wagon, diesel, and all - were available here, I'd buy one.

But, it probably won't happen. It probably doesn't fit Honda's marketing philosophy ... and I doubt if the liftgate extending way down into the rear bumper will pass Canada's tough bumper standard. The wagon next to it (jdh's?) took a while for VW to redesign to meet that standard.

Good thing too! That rear is UGLY
Note to Honda: Don't integrate your bumper into the lift gate because it looks like crap. :p

While it is ugly, I think its very practical, but you are right that it might not pass the muster of bumper standards.

Looking at the picture of both cars, the Honda appears to be no lower to ground then the Jetta. The Jetta's liftgate extends down just as far, but without the plastic body paneling.

And if Ford ever got around to it, they would clean up VW in the diesel market. Their cars in Europe and elsewhere get better mileage then the Insight.

Do they have 3 yr/36,000 mile warranties over there too?

Domestic auto makers are JUST now starting to play catch-up and offering longer factory warranties than the 3 yr/36K mile that has been so common.

Looks like the Accord is Bosch-owned. Besides the Bosch stickers plastered all over it, it has Michigan M-plates on it. If Honda owned it it would wear Ohio plates being that their North American R&D is located there.
