2001 golf auto: excessive vibration

I've got a 2001 golf auto that in the past 6 months or so seems to vibrate excessively while stopped and the transmission is in drive. I've got 100,000 miles on the car. There are no problems shifting. The vibrations are noticeable when stopped. If the car is in neutral or park the vibrations go away. I've done some searches and haven't located anything.

Anyone have some thoughts on this one?

Just wanted to bump this with an update. Just replaced a cv axle with torn inner boot, I thought this may have been the cause based on some researching the site. The strong,way too noticeable vibration persists. It goes away in neutral, but shifting to a drive gear the vibration appears.

Anyone have some thoughts?

Alternator pulley?

Based on the strength of the vibration I was thinking maybe motor mounts. Does anyone know what failing mount symptoms are?

Sounds like something internal to the transaxle to me. Check CoolAirVW, his site might have info that can help.
