Should the rear defrost button stay pressed in when on just like the hazard button does? Or, does it stay on but pop back out?

Anyone?

Thank you

Mine pushes in and stayes in. On my 2001 it stopped working and would't stay in.

A new switch fixed it.

Some cars have a time delay button. You push it in, but it doesn't stay in. A relay in the switch clicks and says on for ~15 min.

Mine doesn't stay in. Defroster LED comes on (or changes to orange if headlights are on) while active. Times out after 5-10 min. I would think yours would be the same as mine.

Yeah it will stay in and defrost will run until you push it again to turn it off.

I don't think there is much juice going to it though cause even with a 45min drive if the snow won't all melt off my back window if there is more than a dusting.

There are two types of switches. The 10 minute timed and the non-timed.

My mk3 is non-timed. My 2000 is timed, my 2005 is non-timed.

I prefer the non-timed. I'd rather leave it on all winter.

Actually it uses a lot of juice. The switch to the non time delay button happened in 2003 as I recall.
I think the rear glass heater uses something like 20 amps of power. That's nearly 250 watts.

Some owners advocate using the defrost on cold mornings, even if you don't need it, to speed warm up time...the amp draw is enough to load the engine and bring it up to temp quicker.
