Hey guys looking for mechanics... have you checked the list first? That is probably your best bet. Good luck!

Hey guys looking for mechanics... have you checked the list first? That is probably your best bet. Good luck!
Not every shop or individual named in this thread makes it to the "recommended" list. A single mention rarely leads to inclusion. So an advanced search using your state's or city's name as a keyword might help you find other choices besides those on the official list.

And also, there is no practical way to keep the list totally current. We try to update addresses and phone numbers, but mechanics change jobs and a shop that had a great mechanic a few years ago might now be assigning work on TDIs to a less-skilled mechanic.

The bottom line, TDI owners: you have to do your own search. Ask other local owners. Ask clerks at parts stores. ("What shops are ordering TDI-specific parts from you?") Ask general questions like, "Who is the best mechanic in town?" and when the best mechanic says he's too busy to work on your car, ask HIM who he would recommend! They know who is good and who is not.

Remember that you do not need a TDI expert for the non-TDI components and systems on your car. There are lots of good VW-Audi shops out there that can do brake work, suspension work, clutch and transmission work, electrical trouble-shooting, etc. You only need a TDI guy for timing belts, fuel system problems, turbo issues, and other difficulties related to the TDI engine.

Last point: the person primarily responsible for maintaining your car is you. Learn all you can about your own car, then you will be able to recognize BS when you ask a mechanic what he thinks is wrong with your car.

Got my car back from Roman at the below address. Highly recommend him. He does only what is needed (and what you approve) and charges a reasonable amount for parts. He uses high quality parts. He replaced some front suspension pieces, did a rear brake job which freed the sticky brakes, replaced two door actuators, fixed all four power windows, and several other things.

Took my Audi there for a timing belt service, ~ 3k miles later
the belt snapped, destroyed the engine. Apparently had a Volvo tech doing
timing belt services. Towed the car back and they let it sit for about 2 months until I pressured them to fix and suddenly it wasn't the untrained Volvo
techs fault but something else that seized, (isn't that convenient, after it sitting
in their lot for so long). Then they tried to make an offer to buy the car for junk price.
Ok, good. I took my car to John a while back and he was great. I had him do an oil change and he seemed like he knew a lot about VW cars in general, TDIs in particular.

First issue I had with him was I gave him all the supplies to do an oil change and fuel filter change. However, when I asked to see how dirty the fuel filter was, he couldn't produce the replaced filter. (This was when he was working at different shop.) It was an awkward moment so I didn't press to see it. He said he had somewhere in the shop.

So now, I believe he's running his own shop and has a couple of guys working under him. I took my car there for subsequent service and even had my gf's car serviced a couple of times, too.

My last service was for a brake job, oil change, and front suspension work (left front spring snapped for some reason). I believe, all work was done by another mechanic that worked for him. I complained to this mechanic that the car was vibrating (not the steering wheel). This mechanic tells me it's probably the warped rotors. So he changed all of them. How John didn't tell me my brakes were close to getting warped on my last service, I don't know. But, whatever, I just wanted the vibration to go away. (I only drive this car on the weekends, btw.)

Brakes were changed, front suspension was changed. I even received a discount for being a TDIClub member and having more than one car when it was time to pay.

But, the vibration was still there. The new brakes were blamed. The new suspension was blamed. I even started thinking I was just imagining it or it's just the car getting old (about 70K mi at that point). Even my mpg started dropping.

So, anway, I took the car to a stealership for a recall after a few months of my last service with John's shop.

Stealership informed me that I had a bent rim in the rear and my alignment was way off. On top of that, one of the rear tire was worn to the steel. Kinda explains the vibration.

I suppose this was my fault as I should've known to get an alignment after the front suspension work but still...

In short, I will not be going back there. In process of setting something up with left lane cars in Irvington for my 80K service. Or maybe say **** it and just get it done at the stealership.

Anyways, anybody have good/ bad stories from leftlanecars? :D

Good Shop in Mesa AZ - Phoenix East Valley

I'd like to highly recommend German Motors in Mesa, AZ, specializing in VWs.
I've done virtually everything on my VW TDI's since my first one in 1983 (except for some dealer work under warranty). Therefore it was a big step to trust someone else to do the work. Since I was coming up on my 2nd timing belt change on my '06 Jetta, I decided to check the camshaft and sure enough, it was starting to go. For various reasons, I decided not to do the work myself and looked extensively for the right shop. Not only did they have an excellent price, their reviews and experience were excellent as well.
I couldn't understand how they did the work at such a reasonable price and discovered that they only charged me the standard timing belt job labor for both the TB and cam job! Besides the outstanding price, they were great to work with, clearly knowledgeable, no BS and very professional. The only additional work they recommended (just as an FYI when I was leaving - no effort to upsell) was in fact clearly needed - a separating tire & leaking EGR cooler valve.
They'll get my business again.

Hello,
Just saw Roman today to have him get my venting system redone on my car since the part fell out and I could no longer top off. He also found me a radio antenna which my car desperately needed as well. He was very well priced on parts and very reasonable on labor too. He really knows his stuff, and we were able to chat awhile. Very personable and I hope he's on the recommended list, because he should be. Great guy, very helpful.

Hi, Is there anyone in the Norfolk, VA area or within 20 minutes? I have a 2000 Jetta that I need some advice on or if they can take a closer look at it.
I use H&B Motorworks in Chesapeake Virginia. I have 225,000 miles on my 2011 JSW and they have been great.

Thanks Sailor! That's still about 3 hours away though. Just would've thought as large as Houston is, that there'd be at least one or more here. I do appreciate your reply though. Have a great day!
Do some research/call around? I'm sure others would be thankful if you discover a good shop to add to the list!

Can't say I blame him. I work seven days a week.
Still, people get pissy with me about a 2-3 week wait to work on their car.
My "vacation" a week ago was cut from 7 days to 3. Had to appease a couple of "children" and then the ban hammer came out.
Vacation? What's that!?!? Lol.

Marin (aka jetta ,97) in North Dallas

Hello all,

Just wanted to give a big kudos to Marin (aka jetta ,97) in North Dallas. I found him on this thread. My 2003 Jetta TDI went into permanent limp mode. I contacted Marin and scheduled a time to drop the car off for diagnosis. He called back the same day and explained the limp mode problem and options for fixing it. He also talked about other issues with the car...all of which I already knew were legitimate issues that needed to be fixed. He spent a long time on the phone explaining his recommendations and prioritizing them.

I picked the car up a couple days later with a custom tune, new Audi TT bushings on upper and lower control arms, and long overdue service items including new fuel filter, AC filter, air filter, tranny fluid, and oil change.

Price was extremely reasonable and the car performs incredibly. I can't believe how much more power it has with the tune. I'll be going back for the remaining item that we discussed (glow plug harness) and eventually new struts.

Marin is definitely a guy to trust and fix your car up right if you are in the Dallas area.

Here's his profile page...
