All 4 Cylinders - Internal Pressure Sensor Fault

Hey everyone,

I am hoping to get some insight into this issue that has been plaguing my 2012 Sportwagen for about 4 months now.

In around November, I got an engine light. It was after a really cold snap. I grabbed my dad's VCDS cable and diagnosed it. I'm still trying to find the log file I downloaded... It's around here somewhere. If it really helps that much, I'll do a re-diagnosis tomorrow and I'll post the log file here - but I'd like to start brainstorming.

I got P13D7 along with the same type of error for every other cylinder - internal pressure sensor fault. It was specifically "Short to Plus". So obviously, there's a short somewhere. Is the short just slightly out of the parameters acceptable by the ECM? Some oddities: every time the weather got slightly warmer, the engine light would disappear. Very strange. When the weather got colder again, the engine light would reappear. (Specifically above/below freezing)

Other notes: the glow plug warm-up indicator on the dash seems to be operating normally - I don't have any kind of issue with my glow plugs themselves as they seem to be warming the cylinders properly. Is this indicative of something else being wrong? The harness (from my understanding) wraps around a huge chunk of the vehicle, and the process of following the entire bundle to check for shorts would be crazy.

Additionally, I've recently removed a piece of crap chinese aftermarket radio from the vehicle as it wasn't reliable and put back the old unit (which is an rcd 310 I believe). The short to plus issue didn't occur immediately after installation but it did seem rather coincidental.. Could the radio have ruined something internally?

I've checked all of the fuses - no apparent damage or issue there. I've checked connections to the battery and they seem fine. I've checked wiring to the old radio and there aren't any shorts or issues.

I just don't know where to begin looking. I find it very unlikely that all of the glow plugs need to be replaced. Are they wired in series? Could the first in the series be effecting the rest of the plugs?

Honestly any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I am a plumber by trade - not an electrician!

There is a TSB for this, but the basic part is to view the cylinder pressure sensor values while moving the connectors on the glow plugs, to see if there is any changes. You may need to splice in some new connectors, or in some extreme cases, a whole new engine harness.

Check Group 141 in VCDS engine data and see what you find.

Okay I will do as you advised... I'll try to move the connectors around to see if those values change. I believe they were all stuck at 255...

When you say a new harness, do you mean bypassing the huge distance of wiring and going from point A to point B directly? (Wherever it connects to the controller and then go directly to the glow plugs) is there a guide for this?

Technical Service Bulletin

The engine harness goes to everything on the engine, up through the holder under the air cleaner area, into the cowl, to the ECU.

However, the glow plug connectors with pigtails are available by themselves that can be [properly] spliced in, and that often is all that is needed.

The part number for these individual ones is: 03L-971-785-A and they serve ONE plug.

I had a similar issue? CEL initially came on when weather cooled and semi cold engine was stressed getting on the freeway. My generic code reader only read the codes 1 out of 4 times before clearing the CEL. The codes were P13CE & P13DO. The repair was covered under warrenty. Codes were for pressure sensor related issue #1 cyl. The #1 glow plug cured it.

I guess I'll just have to test all of them before I do anything else, honestly. I suppose a short on one of the plugs can cause the others to detect a bad connection..

FWIW somewhere I read the cjaa has a pressure sensor/glow plug in all 4 cylinders. Other TDI engines (I forget which) have glow plug with pressure sensors on 2 and glow plugs only on other 2.

I'll do a VCDS test tomorrow - and post the error codes and hopefully we can clarify any doubts or questions we have about what my model is... Exact error codes, etc.
