Brm Toyota swap, g28 problems, SOLVED
First some background info, I have a brm code engine from a 2006 jetta tdi dsg installed into my 1981 toyota pickup truck. I have replaced the camshaft, timing belt, rear main seal and sensor ring. I have uprgraded to a pd140 turbo due to the original turbo having damaged vnt mechanicals. The engine was initially installed with a 5 speed Toyota transmission and it is now connected to a toyota a340 automatic transmission. I used an adapter kit from Diesel conversion specialist. The install was mostly pain free. I did the wiring harness myself. It was pretty easy, only the chassis harness needed modified, the engine harness stayed untouched for the swap.
Now the history of the problem. When I got the donor car it had start and die situation due to a failed immobilizer. I used a bdm100 to do an immobilizer delete. The car then started and ran. At this point the tachometer was jumpy and intermittent. After a short time of the tachometer stopped registering and several other lights flashed on the dash. I also had very long cranking times, but it always started. After researching and scanning with a simple obd2 I determined it had a bad crankshaft position sensor. I replaced the g28 cps and nothing changed, the tachometer still did not work, i had long cranking times, it drove but with slow boost, erratic delayed shifting and limited at approximately 3400rpm. Because the sensor was a bastard to get to and the engine was running I decided to start removing the engine from the car. When the engine was removed and being prepared for the swap the harness was inspected and there were no flaws found, both visually and when continuity was tested, the g28 cps was also replaced again. The engine swap went off without a hitch. The engine was installed into Toyota, starts, runs, and drives. Still with the long cranking times, slow, slow boost, and rpms limited to about 3400rpm. I drove the truck like this for several months. After double, triple, quadruple checking the harness, the sensor, and everything in between with no results, i broke down and bought a vcds to do more in depth diagnostics. Along with several codes that indicate there is no connectivity to the rest of the car, i.e. can bus modules, I have code 16706/p0322 engine speed sensor g28 no signal
This lead to another g28 cps, a complete harness teardown, inspection and test, a new rear main seal and sensor ring to no avail.
I have read every thread on every forum i can find on this code and have done every recommended fix. I will say I haven't replaced the harness because it has no problems and I have also found one thread that suggests my edc16 ecu could have a bad circuit for the g28 cps and in that case i need to replace the ecu. I do not have a working oscilloscope at the moment to see for sure that my sensor is indeed sending a signal that my ecu juat isn't reading correctly. I also need to fix this so I can get my tune and delete done to my ecu. I am at my wits end, who can help me?
