2009 Jetta TDI - dealer says I need a new turbo charger

Check engine light and glow plug flashing.
Car drives and acts like normal.

Used my Ross-Tech VCDS to see what the code is.
DTC P2563 Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor Performance
This code means the sensor has high resistance or signal performance.

I checked the sensor wiring, nothing is broken and the plug is not corroded.

Took the dealer, they are saying the turbocharger is bad and want $3,500 to replace it.

Does this sound normal?
Anyone changed one of these before? Does the engine get pulled?

You need to get away from the dealer and to a guru fast. Check the link in my signature, find one near you and check them out here. Then have them look at your car and see if the dealer is really correct. Worth a second opinion for that kind of money.

hopefully it's just a sensor or actuator, there have been a couple turbos that have gone south on the 2009s, but those you knew the trubo was bad, bent shaft damaged blades didn't run right.

The vane sensor is part of the turbocharger, and yes it probably is bad. However, $3500 to replace one is nuts.

The turbocharger is not [yet] available reman, so you have to buy a brand new one. The part number is 03L-253-016-K and the current VW list price is around $1800. The labor time to replace one is 6.4 hours. Then you'll have about $75 worth of gaskets at the very most.

I would not expect to pay more that about $2900 total, even at a dealer. I could probably do it for about $2600, maybe less.

I am leary on putting something back on that is going to fail again.

Are there aftermarket options for this engine yet?

I am in NW Indiana
I am in Hobart but let me let you in on someone close:

Precision Turbo
Hebron, Indiana

They are fully capable of rebuilding your current turbo and may even have someone able to do the labor portion(R&R) for you?

Was this at Team VW on RT 30?

The car is at Team VW on RT 30 right now...

I will call the Hebron place.

But from what I am reading no one is rebuilding the turbos yet for the 2009?
This does not appear to a be a mechanical issue. It is an issue with the built in sensor.

Borg Warner does not offer a replacement vane sensor anyways. Cannot rebuild what you cannot get parts for.

That really sucks!!

What about a junk yard replacement from a crashed car?

Are you ready to buy another VW?
I guess if you could find a wrecked one and your time to remove it was worth it to you (big job).

I am always on the lookout for another Volkswagen. Needing to find a place for my 2.0L ALH, and am always looking for that T3 Westy that needs some TLC. I only have 6 right now, so room for more.

I called a different VW dealer today and explained the problem.

He said he would recheck the car to confirm the turbo issue.

And if it does need a turbo, I would not need to pay this fee.

He also quoted turbo replacement that was over $800 less then the first dealer.

I am going to drive the car over there this weekend.

Does the sensor even come out of the turbo?

Vane sensor is part of the VNT actuator. It comes off, yes, but is not available as a seperate part. Sucks, too, because I just replaced a turbo on one of these that was grenaded, and it had a good sensor/actuator, but it got scrapped. Didn't even cross my mind to save it.

Yea, I have one in my shop right now where the actuator won't hold any vacuum. If I only saved some of the failed turbos I removed from the past, I could have saved this particular customer a boat load. Later!

If you do need a new turbo you might just see if VW would kick in at least some, if not all of the repair costs under goodwill (assuming you are over the 60K mile warranty) since this is a major failure to happen on a car that is only a couple of years old.

It never hurts to ask and you certainly would never get them to volunteer it but if you told them you are the original owner (assuming this is true) and followed all prescribed maintenance procedures you are shocked to be facing such an expense just after the warranty expired. It is the squeaky turbo that gets the oil, remember.

I got the car back today

VW paid for $600 of the repair - one time good will.

I made VW give me the turbo back. There was no core since it was new.
I am thinking/hoping when they start to rebuild these it would good for a core?

All in all not very happy with the hole situation. This part still looks like new...

If you don't have the skill, get it to a guru for examination. If it's a failed part, that should be easily detectable.

If it's at all convenient, and if it hasn't already been done elsewhere, would you mind posting some pics of the turbo unit? I'd love to learn the anatomy of this particular turbocharger.

What sort of sensor is this, and can a future DIY nutcase like me entertain the idea of repairing it?

The sensor seems easy to replace. But it cannot be purchased - that is the problem.

I have it in a box in the barn. I will get some pics of it eventually.

I know tuners can tune out the sensor on 04-06 PD motors... you could e-mail Malone and get a tune as well as tuning the sensor out :)

however, it looks like the turbo has already been replaced.

Is the turbo covered under the 5year/ 60000 mile power train warranty?

There have been posts stating that VW does not consider the turbo as part of the drivetrain.
