We had our first 75 degree day here this week and the AC on my 97 Passat was very weak. The air was not much cooler than what I got with it off. Any thing I can do without spending a bunch of money at the dealer ship to get this working?

If the comparessor has not dumped on you (like it did on me) a quick fix is to go to the auto store and buy a can of refigerant (just sound it out) and put it in your car. You have to get a hose for it too. Total cost about $12. It is the redneck answer, but it might buy you a few weeks of cooler riding until you can get it looked at. It worked for me, but I did end up getting a new a/c unit.

Follow up on mine. High and low side pressures are the "same". 75 PSI on low side and 79 on high side. Compressor is done.
