diesel additives and oil additives

hello,

can anyone recommend good additives to ensure healthy running of the engine?

bought stp today, the dealer i bought the car of said they were good...

yep, good for padding the seller's pocket.

If you stick to a proper engine oil, you'd never add such snake oil.

well, i posted this AFTER i bought some stp stuff... so i'll try some of your recommendations later i guess hehe.

From your profile it appears you have an older car. I am guessing that you might be losing oil and put it the STP to slow down the loss. If you have a high wear engine you might ordinarily consider increasing the viscosity of the oil, but if you have a turbo this isn't a good idea because the turbo needs a reliable flow of oil.

Fuel additives are another thing. I don't know what additives are available in the UK or what is provided in the fuel, but a lot of folks use Power Service, which has a Winter formula to prevent gelling, or Stanadyne. If you have ultra low sulfur fuel and it isn't treated before sale it might need some lubricity enhancement.
