2003 Jetta TDI sedan, sunroof and multifunction wheel issues. Original factory options not added later.

Still trying to solve this intermittent problem. The computer itself must be shutting the stuff off, because it works for a couple hours after resetting the battery (disconnect, touch contacts and leave for a bit) and without moving the car, everything stops working again after a while. When the CCM decides to be snotty, nothing responds of the windows, power mirrors, sunroof, wheel controls, and the radio randomly goes to safe mode (not always) but always fails to respond to the wheel buttons.

To date:
Tried disconnecting all doors and focusing on wheel / sunroof / radio as the only remaining CCM connected devices. No change. (doesn't work after some random amount of time <4 hours)

I have another wheel module (451) tried swapping that, but did not observe any difference. I cannot connect to the steering wheel in Vag-Com, should I be able to?

Replaced clockspring. Replaced wheel buttons and harness. Verified 5.5v on both ends of both canbus wires from cluster to CCM, so it doesn't seem to be a broken wire at least there.

Sourced a numbers-matching CCM from a boneyard 03 sedan with the same options (even the same color)... Did not observe a difference. Still didn't work.

Right now it has the original CCM still in it and swapped 377 and 451 modules. If I reset everything, it will all work fine for at least a couple hours, then stop working without moving the car or changing anything. This is very frustrating.

Here is the complete scan that I just did this last time, sometimes the error is company data bus FAILURE rather than just intermittent:

Your autoscan cut off before reading the CCM...

Can you communicate to the CCM at all?

Have you tried unplugging all the doors yet, which I believe was suggested in another thread?

It didn't cut off - that was everything, so anything not listed was not able to connect. So no. I know that it CAN communicate sometimes with the CCM, after the battery is disconnected and the system resets, it can communicate and I can talk to the CCM for a while.

Unplugging all the doors did not change anything, and I posted that above.

Am I supposed to be able to connect to the steering wheel module? I cannot.

Have you removed the instrument cluster and inspected the plugs on the back? I've had a couple way back when with coolant migration from the overflow reservoir. It would slowly make its way through the body harness to the back of the instrument cluster and cause all sorts of fun issues.

It's also possible the instrument cluster itself just has an internal fault of sorts.

This is where an oscilloscope would come in real handy to see what the high and low side of the comfort data bus is upto.

Yes I've pulled the cluster, found nothing obvious.

Resetting the computers again resulted in no change. I have no idea where to go next, and I don't have an oscilloscope or the knowledge to use one on this.

Notice the Cluster and Gateway are both setting DTCs for Comfort CAN buss No Comm and defective. That along with the occasional SAFE mode of the radio tells me there is a buss issue.

I agree with Matt-98AHU - you need to see whats going on with that CAN buss to figure this problem out.

How about disconnecting the Cluster and see if the problem is still there?

Gateway is inside the cluster, but CAN isn't the communication standard at the data link connector on a mk4. It's still oldschool K line.

Central Convenience module splices into the K line that goes to the DLC, grey wire, white stripe. At the CCM, that wire should be at T23/11.

You should in theory still be able to communicate with the CCM even if the gateway is unplugged.

Can you verify that you're getting battery voltage to the CCM at pins T15/12, T15/13 and T23/22? Those three should have power at all times.
