I broke the center little pillar thing in the fuel filter housing doing a filter change. I need a new filter housing but I wasn't sure if this one would work. My car was made before 04-31-2006 and uses the old filter housing and filters. Would this filter housing bolt up and work fine even though it's for cars made after 04-31-2006?

If it will bolt up and work fine I'll get it and just buy the newer filters for next time. Wasn't sure if anyone has tried this or not.

Looks like it should do the trick.

give them your VIN, and ask them to verify it will work. (then they are on the hook if you get any issues, which I do not think you will have.)

Thanks I'll give them a try and I'll let you know if it works or not. Can't drive around without filtering the diesel forever.

I would switch to the newer style personally. You'll need the T, bracket and a filter. Unless I'm mistaken and it's not located in the engine bay.

So the newer style filter housing isn't located in the engine bay? This is starting to sound like a big PITA lol

Ok, to each his own. That's not something I'd do. I'd install the correct filter housing, or the later filter housing.
Going back to an ALH filter would be going in reverse imho.
Sometimes taking a step back is the best move.

I don't think that the housing with removable media is so beneficial.

VW reinventing the wheel over and over is ludicrous when the only defect with the last one is a plastic t.
Just make it a metal t...

I was thinking it was an older, rather than newer, vehicle which is why I said newer housing.

The filter housing says it's for BRM engines not ALH. It's just a newer filter housing with a different looking filter inside. I mostly just wanted to know if it would bolt up to the stock position and not give me any issues. I messaged ECS Tuning and the rep said he's contacting a "VW parts specialist" to see if I could use it or not.

The reason I can't install the correct filter housing is that I can't find one! I would install the OEM one but can't find a new one.

No reason to over think this. Same mounting and same 3 hose connections. You will have to buy the newer style filter without the the hole in the bottom.

Same as its ever been.
One line comes from the tank and one returns.
One line supplies the IP one comes back from the engine.

Definitely don't over think it.

I only recommend going back to old style filter because of the mess the filter change makes,
And the ease of replacement.

New housing generally supercedes the previous for all vehicles.

ECS "VW parts specialists" said it was a direct bolt on. So I ordered it. I'll be sure to open the filter housing and check out what filter it comes with so I can order the correct one for future filter changes. I also will probably swap out the POS star bit bolts with some nice looking Allen cup head bolts. I'll post some pictures to let you guys know how it works out. Thanks for all the replies I appreciate it!

be sure to just snug the cap screws in. the torque spec is 44 inch pounds. those cap screws just need to not come loose.

Thanks for the torque specs, saves me having to look in the Bentley manual for it. It just shipped today so hopefully I'll get it by Thursday. Driving the car without a way to filter the fuel is kinda sketchy but I have to get to work.

Is there a speciality tool for removing the small band clamps that hold the hose onto the filter housing nipples? Mine are flush with the hose and I can't get them off with vice grips.

Anytime I remove those clamps it's destruction and replacement with a serviceable type factory clamp. I hate when car manufacturers force you to get their tools.

Yeah I can't get them off without cutting the lines. So is there a speciality tool or not? I don't mind buying a tool if it keeps me from needing to replace $200 worth of fuel lines...

I have not done the clamps, but hose clamp pliers should help.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Astro-Pneumatic-Hose-Clamp-Pliers-AST9409A/206859121?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cTHD%7cG%7c0%7cG-BASE-PLA-D25T-HandTools%7c&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9fLMv7K91QIVQSWBCh1XVg5IEAQYBCABEgLmg_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CJ2emsOyvdUCFQ6-swodFUgPJw

something like these might work. Oilhammer recommended a preferred brand.

would also come in handy for eventual coolant hose clamps.

for just the fuel filter hose, I bet you could just use standard pliers, if you look for a large pair with jaws thick enough to match the spread of the hose clamp.

Does anyone know the size of the nut that goes on the stud that holds the fuel filter on? I dropped it and can't find it. I finally got the **** hose clamps off using the hose clamp tool recommended by meerschm. Thank you!

If you don't get a direct answer, call or stop by a local dealer parts desk,

ask them for the part number, then you can look up the part number online to get the size which includes the thread size and pitch.

They should be able to look up the part by your VIN, and get the right info. (some dealers will also be reasonable on cost for such small parts.)
