I am a single mom on a very tight budget. My daughter and I both drive VW diesels. I would like to change my oil myself. Somewhere I remember seeing a kit that included a pump to remove the oil. Both of my cars have metal skid plates and it would be so much easier to do it from the top! Thanks in advance for any recommendations you might have.:)

I have the mityvac 7400:

http://www.amazon.com/Mityvac-7400-..._2?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1282318187&sr=8-2

it works quite well. Others use the Pela. The topside oil change is very very simple. There are videos all over the place on how to do it. Oil changes end up costing about 30 bucks after you get all the equipment. I suggest you get the rubber strap oil filter remover or an oil filter wrench to take off the cap of the oil filter.

The Pela 6000 is a little more expensive than it used to be -- now it's about $55-60 including shipping, where it used to be less than $40.

An alternative is to install Fumoto valves in place of the oil drain plugs, with a short flexible hose to run directly into a drain pan. www.lubricationspecialist.com sells Fumoto valves. When you are ready to drain, just position the drain pan and turn the petcock.

I've used my Pela 6000 for about 28-30 oil changes and have had to replace the hose once (from Lowe's or Home Depot). It would be even more useful when you have more than one TDI to maintain.

I myself use the Pela extractor and you basically need to watch the video. Pretty much the procedure is same for most TDI cars. Make sure you find out proper capacity of your particular TDI motor. Peter at www.idparts.com sells a nice oil change kit that makes it pretty easy. If both of your cars are 2003 tdi cars, then you'd be able to use the same oil and in this case any other oil stating that it meets VW spec 505.00 would be fine. If you have a TDI 2004-2006, then you would need an oil meeting 505.01 specification. If you have a newer common rail TDI (2009 to present) you would need a 507.00 vw spec oil.

Again if you would call one of our vendors such as www.idparts.com you will be guided to the right course of action.

But by all means read the boards and ask questions. Some people have had great luck with Mobil 1 TDT (turbo diesel truck) oil which is relatively inexpensive at around 20 bucks a gallon. However, I would not use it with the new common rail diesel. But of course read up on this subject as the Mobil 1 TDT is not a VW approved oil, but has some other important approvals.

Remember to be careful in tighting the oil filter cap as it does not need to be torqued to smithereens. With my Passat, I torque the oil cap to 18 ft pounds. If you choose to drain the oil be careful with the drain plug as it only needs 22 ft pounds. If you over torque, you could strip the delicate oil pan threds.

Below is a video on how to change your oil using a Pela.

The least expensive solution would be to use Shell Rotella T6 5w40, sold in gallon jugs at Walmart. Or any other 5w40 that you see on sale for around $5/quart or less.

I'd recommend you purchase a Pela extractor, get filters online and buy Shell Rotella T6 or Mobil TDT from WalMart, get the gallons. You will also need a filter wrench to remove the filter cap. I'm sure there is a video online outlining the process. Topside changes are quick & easy. Good luck, John

What model are you and your daughgter driving. I have a PD, 2006.5 BRM engine type and the oil extractor will not work on it, you have to bottom drain that car. I had another guru attempt with his Pela as well, the pan has a hump that prevents you from getting all the way dow to extract the oil.

Just hand tight the oil filter cap and it's more than tight enough.
Yes, as long as the big O-ring is on straight, if you tighten the filter by hand it will not leak.

I have an 02 tdi golf...never had a diesel before, but always did my own oil changes...so now with diesel, I see that there is a certain oil pump that I need to use...what is this pump for? Why can't I just drain the oil, like I did other gas vehicles? Sorry for the question, but I am new to diesel and I did do tons of reading...but haven't been able to find answer for this question yet. Thanks!!!

You can drain it from the oil pan (like most vehicles), or extract it from out the dipstick tube.

Some folks use either a Pela 6000 or a Mityvac as a topside extractor. Or they drain from the bottom, in which case I'd recommend a Fumoto valve for simplicity and to avoid wear-and-tear on the drain plug and oil pan threads.

Sadly, none anymore
You don't *have* to use an extractor, it just saves you the hassle of jacking the vehicle up and climbing under it. Feel free to Use the conventional method of utilizing the drain plug in the pan, if you want :)

Which method is better for the vehicle?

Is the drain plug more fragile in diesels? Just trying to put this together so it makes sense for me.

I will definitely check out the valve that you recommended. Thank you. :)

the aluminum pan is easily stripped or cracked by overtorquing. the fumoto works great and you only need to get it properly torqued once,

someone was asking for the drain plug torque spec- i'm pretty sure its 30 nm (22 ft-lbs)

In the grand scheme, no difference either way as far as the oil quality / condition goes.
Does the pump remove oil from the drain pan only, or does it remove from all canals (ie creating vacuum)? Can crankshaft bearings be damaged using a pump over time?

Do VW dealerships use pumps for oil changes?

You suck the oil from the pan and oil filter housing/oil cooler. There's not a huge vacuum created.

/EDIT: I haven't been to a dealer in years. I suspect they drain it the traditional way so they can inspect the bottom-side at the same time.

To ATLSilver TDI: I also have a 06.5 BRM Disel Edition and have used the Pella from the first oil change at 5k miles, now 112k. My lowered mk4 had a Panzer plate and the Pella made it much easier, that's how I change now. It's quick & easy from the topside. John
