Just found in my research the Q5 TDI has a tow rating of 4400 versus 3500 for the GLK250. So another point in Audi's favour, since we do have a camping trailer that we need to move on occasion.

Anyone else have any trailering experience care to comment on how well it behaves and fuel economy with some weight hanging off the back like that?

Newbie here. I've had our TDI Q5 since Nov and we now have 18500kms on it with about 11000kms of that towing. Factory tow hitch, 5x8 enclosed cargo trailer. I get about 37-39 imperial miles to gallon with no trailer and 23-27 imperial miles to gallon with the trailer. I stick to 65-70 mph while towing. I'd estimate I am pulling 3000lbs. For comparison I have a 2003 Dodge diesel 2wd pickup and I can pull the same trailer and get 18.5-20 imperial miles to gallon.
It is a pretty good tow vehicle but you do know the trailer is there where as with the Dodge you don't feel it at all.
We looked at the GLK before we bought the Q5 and I don't think I'd tow 3k with it and feel comfortable with a 4 cyl. I didn't think the 2.0 Audi gasser would be a good tow vehicle either.

Hmmm, interesting. I have pulled our 6x6x12 single axle enclosed trailer with a full load (about 3000#) using an aftermarket hitch and this was with a 2012 2T petrol engine. I barely knew the trailer was there towing about 900km from Orillia Ontario to Ottawa round trip. I have since purchased a 2014 q5 tdi in order to tow a 25 foot airstream. I am totally confident that his vehicle will tow the airstream with no trouble.
