99 jetta start then dies

99 tdi ran fine then the clutch went out parked the car for about a month then pulled it out and replaced it took another month to get it done go to start it up and it just starts and dies after a few second then just cranks and sputters let it sit and it does it all over again pull the codes p1144 cleared them to see if they come back (started it with the mass air flow sensor unplugged) needing some help where to go from hear need to get this car running

Sounds like either fuel restriction, or air in fuel. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? How full is the tank? How many miles are on it? The in take pickup tube can get clogged over time.

Fuel filter put new one on

Fuel filter has about 5k on it ran it off 2 pop bottles filled with fuel same thing when it first fires it runs good then dies 225k on the car tank is almost full has fuel treatment in it even question whether it might be gelling up from sitting so I put some 911 in it and the fuel filter

Might be a stretch, but check the low pressure regulator to see if it fell apart. It's that screw looking like deal next to the fuel inlet of the pump.

Another interweb guess: Fuel (diesel+air) yes, but air, you must be getting diesel or it wouldn't start and run for 2 seconds after sitting. Clogged filter, loose piping, ASV. Check the pressure regulator, easier than the explanation- There is a bit on a stalk, you'll find it "walked off", slip it back on and re-install.

Check the anti shudder valve to make sure it is not stuck shut.

Sitting a couple of months, maybe a critter has taken up residence in the air box under the filter or in the hose leading to the filter box.
