General Motors has been hard at work developing an aftertreatment system that incorporates an electrically heated diesel particulate filter. According to GM, this technology promises to cut the “fuel penalty” of current DPF/regeneration systems by 50 percent. The electrically assisted DPF (or EADPF) works in conjunction with a traditional diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR, or urea injection). Initial tests were performed on a four-cylinder 1.9L Fiat/GM diesel, but data shows the system should work just as well on V-6 and V-8 engines.

Thank you ATR, for this may well end up being reviewed by those involved in the current "Diesel Gate" issue.
I tend to doubt it, since the current dieselgate issue is unrelated to the DPF. Our DPFs actually work quite well, it is the control of oxides of Nitrogen that is the issue in Dieselgate. Controlling these NOx emissions happens after the DPF has removed the soot from our exhaust.

Have Fun!

Interesting, the energy to heat it still comes from somewhere however.
Only takes a minute or two of power usage to kick off the ignition of soot. I'm sure that designing a alternator to handle the load is mostly all that's needed. The big news here is the fuel savings that the tech offers to newer common rails. :D
