2005 Passat TDI GLS Wagon, 2003 Golf TDI, 1998 Jetta TDI sadly totaled by teen driver, 2014 Jetta SportWagen TDI
Our wonderful family 2005 Passat TDI wagon has finally come to a stop. My son got married last weekend and on the way to the ceremony the head gasket leaked! It did not over heat but blew out all the water through the exhaust pipe. So we are putting it up for sale since we bought a 2014 Jetta TDI last year.
It has 252,213 miles. We consider ourselves the original owners although we bought the wagon used with 7000 miles on it. The "sailor" set sail for different seas, I guess. It has a 2.0 4 cylinder diesel. TB and all other parts replaced at around 200,000 miles. The automatic trans has been serviced several times through out the life of the vehicle and has no known issues. Front wheel bearing were replaced within the last year. The door locks have issues. Front seats have rips and are sporting covers as per pictures. Tires are newer. Replaced radio with a custom deck. I have a new Garret turbo that is still in the box that I will throw in for a few bucks more. Asking 1250.00

There are just too many to list....
The EGR cooler has failed. The device that exchanges the heat from the EGR being pulled back into the intake manifold with the cooling system. That is why you have a sudden, massive amount of coolant in the exhaust.

It is bolted to the intake manifold up high, on the side of the engine. Has two coolant hoses (back by the firewall) attached to it, and an inlet tube (comes from exhaust manifold) and an outlet tube (up high, goes to the intake manifold, right ahead of the EGR valve itself).

Held on with three screws, one is a pain due to it being right by the VNT actuator on the turbo. Sort of a pain to swap, but far less of a big deal than a head gasket. It happens, I have done a few of them.

OH beat me to it

What he said, ++

2004 models had it the worst I think. VW replaced mine under warranty once, and 3 or 4 years later that one let go too. Lots of owners end up deleting and getting the error tuned out. I held off until about 300k miles, figured I've done my part.

A new car costs much more CO2 in manufacturing, than the difference my car will emit. Even if it seems a million miles, I bet.

If you like the car, keep it.

SoCATDI- I am by Lake Belton and have VCDS and a covered work area if you want to tackle the EGR cooler replacement. I am not a professional mechanic, but having owned several TDIs since the late 90s, I have become fairly proficient.
