Do a search of this forum. Thundershorts rescued a Passat that had been underwater. He opened up the TCM and ran it through a dishwasher cycle, which cleaned and dried it. It worked for him.found this thread after I did a search ..... I suppose I'm in for big bucks I found 1 & 1/2 inches water in the pass side back foot well ..... my car suddenly is not shifting proper and got a engine check light on . It seems I'm in serious trouble here .. learning this all too late. Wonder what you guys would advise from this stage of the game??/
bummed in Va.
Thanks.... gonna go after it and see if Thundershorts idea of drying the works might work. Also, is the gasket under the air filter the sole culprit for the initial leak here? Thanks. If the carpet and mat got wet, then you'll have to pull the seats, trim, and get the carpet and mat away from the floor boards. I was amazed at how much water the padding held when my daughter left the driver's window down. I ran the blower from the shop vac under the pad for about 18 hours and it was still slightly damp when I put it all back together.
2004 tdi passat..... and I pulled the tcm , found it all wet... wiring wet... so I washed it in dishwasher to clean it. Dried it and will be installing soon to see if she will run. The drain holes were open in the plenem .. it appears the cowl that covers around the wipers was loose from windshield and may have been the culprit, letting all that water into the cabin filter duct and the rear footwell area. I am testing the fix in rain today. I may need a new tcm. a new torque converter, a new tranny , then again I may not need anything if she up and runs good. Right now I just need time to get her all together , and will report back. Faith folks , faith. What car are you talking about?
Thanks for all the good advise here ...... got it all together and discovered water still got in so yeah ... I needed to go further and get that tough plastic cabin filter holder out and sure enough... there I found the outer gasket in bad shape... replaced it and added some silicon caulk on top of my new gasket to ensure a better seal. replaced everything and WOW !!!! My car runs great again. Just need to find someone with VAG to take my cel off yet. Thanks everyone !!!!!you did of course take the tcm out of its aluminum case before you washed it. let air dry for a day, then brush off all the light residue particularily on ic's. you can use alcohol with a cue tip as well. don't forget the underside of the circuit board
When I place the gear selecter into reverse it goes in with a bang... not a smooth shift as usual.... sometimes pulling up a grade it will slip .... as in throttle without wanting to go. Otherwise things seem fine. I did get the carpet up again and things were damp again probably from washing the car. I am drying things up again. I'm miffed as to how the water gets in there. The wireing was wet again, although the TCM was dry. ThanksI don't think slam bang reverse is caused by anything in the tcm, If you get hesitation getting pressure after shifting into reverse, many things could cause it, from low fluid to and including clutch "D" failing or the drum D fracturing, causing a pressure leak. How many miles? Has the pan ever been off to service it? dielectric grease is not the thing to use...dielectric translates to "against electric" You would be better off buying some deoxit at radio shack and use that..Trans slipping going up grades or poor engine performance?
