Ok, so I get the idot 'Light out' warning light... so I run a VAG-COM Scan and get this..

1 Fault found:
00987- Lamp for Brake Light; Left (M9)
012- Electrical Fault in Circuit
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 01101100
Fault priority: 1

time indication 0

Freeze Frame:

That was the readout after I reset the codes the first time
the first readout was similar except with lower mileage and a higher voltage (14.10V) first time.

any suggestions? The brake lights, turn signals, and flashers all seem to work fine.

Thanks in advance

Might be the brake light switch. Those tend to be a sore spot on A4s...not sure about A5s yet.

Thanks for the replies.

I cleared the codes, then hit the brake pedal a few times, turn signals, etc with engine on. no light.

Then I went into the V-C to activate the DRL's using long code helper, did not have much of effect. reversed the setting, and closed out, then noticed the warning light for (brake light) was lit again.

I guess I should clear the codes then leave it alone and see how long it takes to light up again.

ok, here is the update. I can clear the codes, stepping on the brakes does not cause the fault to re-appear, however turning on the headlights does cause the fault to appear.
in the 'supported codes' section i get the folllowing red items:

DTC 00987- Failure mode 012
MIL triggered: no, Active: yes, Stored: yes, Test finished: yes

DTC 22783- Failure mode 015
MIL triggered: yes, Active: yes, Stored: yes, Test finished: no

DTC 04351- Failure mode 015
MIL triggered: yes, Active: yes, Stored: yes, Test finished: no

DTC 65535- Failure mode 015
MIL triggered: yes, Active: yes, Stored: yes, Test finished: no

DTC 65296- Failure mode 015
MIL triggered: yes, Active: yes, Stored: yes, Test finished: no

DTC 65535- Failure mode 015
MIL triggered: yes, Active: yes, Stored: yes, Test finished: no

DTC 04351- Failure mode 015
MIL triggered: yes, Active: yes, Stored: yes, Test finished: no

DTC 65535- Failure mode 015
MIL triggered: yes, Active: yes, Stored: yes, Test finished: no

These are in order, but I left out the ones that printed in black.
Any guesses?
thanks in advance.

Based on your update, I'm wondering if you don't have a flaky 09 module.

We haven't looked at what the Supported Codes list looks like on that module when it's happy, nor do I have an 06 Jetta handy. Maybe somebody else here with a similar car could do that?

[soapbox]
Did you get the "chrome" base bulb or the brass coloured base bulb? I have dealt with many people who complain of constant bulb replacement. I take out the cheap bulb and put in a better quality bulb (you can get the same bulb as the dealer from Wal-Mart). They come in months or a year later for service and comment that the bulb I put in is still there. [/soapbox]

And I have seen a higher rate of failure recently where the filament is still there, but not carring current. Not like in the past where you could see a chunk of it missing. Put a DVOM (multi-meter) on the bulb and PRESTO! Open circut.

Happy motoring!

Jason

EDIT: Sylvania made by Osram - the OE bulbs are Osram.
