1999.5 A4 (PQ34) platform. The engine code is ALH, and the 5 speed manual is DQY (type 02J). The automatic transmission is ECN (type 01M).

There is a sticker affixed to the timing belt cover. It will have the code and serial number printed on it, with a bar code. The same serial number is stamped onto the block, but it may have corroded away too much. The block stamp is located near the transmission/oil pan joint.

Additionally, there is a build specification sticker that is supposed to be affixed to the spare wheel well, as well as in the owner's manual, general section if I recall correctly. In the radio section, the original dealer should have affixed a radio code sticker. This build spec sticker has the engine code, transmission code, and paint code. Below the main codes are PR numbers for all variable options, such as suspension class, types of mirrors, wheels, and so on. Some build stickers were misprinted and are missing a few codes.

jcrews, checked the wheel well. ALH engine code. DQY for the 5 speed. so it's an A4 engine. Thank you so much!

The easy way to tell the difference between an A3 and A4 '99 Jetta: if it looks like a '98 (kinda angular and boxy) it's an A3. If it looks like a 2000 (more rounded and sleak) it's an A4.

And IIRC, A3=4 lugbolts, A4=5.

Pop the hood. If you have a little "pull lever" come out from under the hood for the second latch, it's an A4. If you have to find the second latch by reaching under the hood, it's an A3. If adults can sit in the back seat, it's an a3. If your chin rests on your knees when in the back seat, it's an A4.
