Fuel leaking from Tank

Started smelling raw diesel fuel more and more often as I get out of my 02 Jetta.

Looked around and found diesel fuel Dripping from the bottom of the tank. I opened up the top access hole from below the rear seats and saw a small puddle of fuel on the sides of the cover.

I looked at the return and send lines and they look fine visually. I wiped all the extra fuel off and drove another 50 miles. A day later, I see some drips again, maybe the size of 3 quarters.

What's my next step? Is there a better way to examine the lines? Is there a seal for the cap that goes bad?

Thanks

Check if it's drooling down from the fill tube. It would only leak when full.
Otherwise guessing the tank is compromised.

Check that the cap on the top of the fuel tank is tight. (under the PS rear seat) Mine wasn't and I was having the same problem as you until I tightened it.

Well that big plastic cap on top does have a gasket, iirc.
But in the tank area there's just the filler tube, the fuel line plumbing and the tank itself.
You'll find it.

Looks like the previous owner had a crappy shop replace the fuel sending unit and they ended up pinching the o-ring gasket. Bought a new gasket for $10 at NAPA. All is good.
