Black junk in fuel lines

Car sat for 3 maybe 4 years. I started and drove it every couple of months but I know that the fuel in the tank was from 2016. Recently put together the money to start getting it back on the road. I put a fresh tank of fuel in it around 11 gallons and drove it for about 100miles.

Today I am changing fuel filter and lines. I began by running diesel purge through a fuel filter.

This trash came out as I began running Diesel Purge. Visible black dots suspended in fuel.

I noticed black trash in all lines coming from tank and to and from heads.

This came out of the inlet lines from tank to filter. https://photos.app.goo.gl/tNdjRLybWs96SW2j7

This came out of the return from the head

This came out of the line going to the tandem pump from filter

This is on the return side of the filter.

My fuel lines look like this.

I am replacing the ones visible under the hood.

How concerned do I need to be for my injectors?

The tandem pump appears to have an oil leak. I’ll be running tests on it later this week, pressure and volume.

The in tank pump is confirmed inop. I will be pulling and replacing once new one arrives. Can I safely drive this tank of fuel out and then clean tank while replacing lift pump or do I need to drain and clean before proceeding? Are my injectors likely damaged?

Car has 210,000 miles with new cam and timing belt done in 2016 at 205,000.

Thanks for any advice.

It is 'normal' for the PD engines like yours to have combustion soot enter the fuel.
However, that looks like more than just soot. Your fuel filter should protect the injectors.
A full drain, flush and new filter sounds like the right idea. Those hoses gotta go, too.

I appreciate the response. I don’t remember the black film being in the lines the last time I replaced fuel filter. 2015? I wiped as much of the the thick slime out of the tank as possible yesterday. I am assuming algae and will keep doing algae treatment over the next few tanks. Looking at the price of injectors, I was having nightmares of them getting screwed up from this junk.

Looks like algae. If you get enough loosened up it could plug the fuel filter. I would plan on a fuel filter change soon down the road as you get this resolved.

If you are using the car normally and don't let the fuel sit for many years, it shouldn't allow that build up. A tank of biodiesel will really clean it up (and send it down stream to the fuel filter).
