Default Info for MO Residents re: sales tax on new car

I know there has been some question on how to get the sales tax on these cars. Awhile back, a poster put a link to a form you can fill out to get reimbursed (very helpful).

I thought I was going to have to do that route, paying full tax on my replacement until reimbursement. Today I went to the DMV in KC area, and I took my receipt from Buyback on a whim. Since I did that, I was able to only pay tax on the difference instead of the full amount.

I was very happy to have to pay way less out of pocket and not have to submit for reimbursement. Worth a try!

Yes that worked for me too... the reason so many people need the reimbursement form is they bought the replacement (and registered it/paid sales tax) BEFORE they sold their car back to VW. If you don't buy your replacement (or get temp tags so you at least don't have to register it) until after your buyback (complete with final receipt from VW) all is well

I bought my replacement before and did get temp tags, so that seems to be the best option if you are buying before. Just very glad I didn't have to pay on the full deal and then try to get reimbursed.

Which DMV did you go to? The one in Grandview was super chill.
Also, this is good news. I just got MO plates put on the Jetta the end of January and paid all the fees and taxes and inspections and whatnot (ID / OD) I turned my car in on March 10th and have not yet purchased a replacement vehicle. I will probably do so next month once my TDI's loan gets paid off.
The Jetta was my first car, so this is all new to me. I have no previous experience with car paperwork. Hoping this basically means I will get a bit of a break when I buy my new car and go to get it all legal-like.

I went to Grandview. Closest to where I live. Usually it is a horrible experience there but this one was great - had to wait longer than I'd anticipated at 8 am though. I've taken the time to drive out to Lees Summit one and I'd advise going there if you are close to the end of a month (much quicker there).

I think you need to buy the new car within a certain time frame, so check on that (I think it's a year, not sure). Be sure to take the actual printed out receipt you got from the Buyback Specialist as it is what they need.

I was prepared to pay the full tax on full price and have to file for reimbursment, so this bit of news kept a good chunk of change in my pocket.

Looks like I got this right by accident. Bought the replacement car but didn't register it/pay sales tax until after I turned the Jetta in. Other than a long look at the VW generated sales receipt by the clerk, the process was smooth at the DMV in Clayton.

I have good luck at the grandview location. I live near there too in Birchwood off Jackson Ave.

How did the $$ part work out? Did the entire amount VW gave you offset your new car or was it only as much as you paid for it? Our 2015 Passat has an offer for 30,888 that we haven't yet accepted since we want to put some more miles on it and are essentially paying down the loan on the next care we purchase. Plan is to maybe do a 4th of July or even end of year purchase of a 2017 Accord V6 Touring. We only paid $22,500 for the Passat though. I've got offers on the Accord for $30,500. Will we still pay tax on the difference we purchased the Passat (30,500-22,500) or can we use the entire buyback amount to reduce or eliminate MO sales tax?

Your situation doesn't compare entirely to mine, but I'm pretty sure the answer is on the buyback amount (I'm not sure how they'd know the amount you paid)? That may be something the IRS may be more interested in (if you "made" money on the buyback). IE you'd pay income tax on the difference (no clue, not a tax guy).

For me it was total of new car, approx $24k - $21K so I only had to pay sales tax on difference of $3k.

Yes, I think register/sales tax has to occur after turn in to make it this easy.

So it's the date when you register your replacement vehicle, not the date when you purchased it? That would get us back into the 180 day bracket (barely) and mean a big refund.
We got her Touareg in mid August/16 but used up the free 30 day temp tags to register in mid September/16. Turn in date for the Jetta was 3/8/17.
Thank you rac for the insight.
I'm goin' to my DMV first thing tomorrow and let ya'll know what I find

Friend at the DMV said they must go by the purchase date no matter when you register to get into the 180 day limit on sales tax refunds in MO.
