Whitey's info will go here:

....I would seriously contemplate buying a wrecked leather A4 gasser with a 5 speed and swapping over the trans and the interior.
I know...it was late when you wrote that. Nice story though :) The auto isn't that bad if you change the fluid like you did to whitey.

No, I meant you can't use a gasser tranny in a TDI unless you want to scream on the highway, I bet for worse economy than an 01M :)

I can get 50US MPG with my car if I keep my foot out of it, not a problem at all (the foot is a problem).

Yes, you are correct. For the same reason an 01M can not be used from any other VW besides a TDI.

But to get the leather interior and all the clutch, shifter and console trim needed to do the conversion, I would likely try to find a wrecked gasser for the donor to rob the parts from. If I couldn't get the ring and pinion swapped out (the best Diff guy in the S.E. USA is a close friend of mine), then I only need a TDI transaxle which another friend of mine who runs a boneyard could easily get me one shipped in from anywhere in the US.

And there would always be the 6-speed option at that point... all for probably less $$$ than trying to get the 01M fixed.

All this is a moot point if KERMA is able to develop an upgraded 01M or upgraded 01M master kit.

IPT already sells such kits. It is alot less than the money some people pay to have someone rebuild the tranny, but one has to be capable of rebuilding the tranny. I agree, I would likely go 5spd if/when mine fails. The auto was a compromise for my wife, but I have grown somewhat fond of it over the past 3 years. Adding a real tranny cooler really helps IMHO.

I hope Kerma brings out a swap service :) Stock tranny for kerma tranny +$$$$

PS I like Red and Whitey alot and can't wait for further development of your pipes...um that sounds wrong but you know what I mean.
