I just had the 02J 5-speed transmission, DMF, clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing replaced in my 1998 New Bettle TDI that I purchased USED in May 2007. There are now 227,978 miles on the car. Just got back from a 259.5 mile test drive that gave me 51.08 MPG.
As far as I am concerned, the DMF was bad for some time before I purchased the car. I believe that it caused damage to the transmission. I do not believe that there are any springs left inside the DMF.
Here is a 5 second video of the DMF sitting on my work bench. If you think that this is good, please tell me that I am an idiot and do not know what I am looking at.
It is ok to use the video clip on your web site or as you see fit as long as you do not charge others for it.
The original 1.5 Meg MOV file can be sent to you if you want to host/use it.
