Well, I did it! I was on the way to the airport to head off to D.C last Friday and I knew that I would either miss my flight due to running out, or I would make it ;).
Back to the story though--on the 6th I was at 852 miles. I didn't think it was fair all of you A4's out there getting more mileage, so I decided to even the playing field. I knew that A3's have 15.5 gallons, and A4's have 16.9 gallons. So at 852.5 miles I filled up with 1.4 gallons of ULSD at the local Sinclair and went off to conquer the 900 mile club.

I then thought that I should take a pic to show that I wasn't even out of the reserve with the extra fuel.

I then did mostly highway driving and on the morning of the 8th I filled up on the way to the airport. I put in 15.4 gallons (so .1 gallons left) for a total of 16.8 gallons on 954.5 miles for 56.81 MPG.

Can I rightfully claim entrance into the 900 mile club?:)
Cheers,
-BB

Another doping scandal?

You're opening a real can of worms there. Odds are the review committee will frown on your attempt -- do not pass Go, do not collect $200  ;) :D

love that 55mph

mark me down, 806.03 on 15.287 gallons for 52.74mpg. drove from Omaha to St Louis averaging 70mph, then 55mph down/back to/from Poplar Bluff for teh ONGTG. now i need to find somewhere far away where i can take county hwys the entire trip. that should get me to 900 miles, although i'll need 59mpg for that...

Ok, so I'm finally in! 802.1 miles on 15.211 gallons! But I had to trade my speed-loving soul for it. I didn't go over 50MPH the entire time! So painful (must find happy place, happy place...).

So here's my question: should I have to do that in order to get 800 miles out of a tank? I've read that some people average 75MPH and get 800 miles out of a tank in an A4. Compared to these guys, my highway economy absolutely *stinks*! I routinely get in the 30's when I start traveling in excess of 70MPH. What gives? Any ideas?

I do live in NH, and there are a lot of hills, but I've gotten really good at recouping the energy from them, and planning my turns.

Also, I've found that at 50MPH, I get almost exactly 50MPG. Anyone else experience this? What mileage do you get at 50MPH?
(and yes, I do have a scangage)

Okay, 3 of my last 4 tanks have been 800+, and the 4th wasn't only because I had to cut it short due to a weekend (and no B99 access on the weekends).

16.303gal/813mi: 49.9MPG
16.408gal/835mi: 50.9MPG
14.400gal/734mi: 51.0MPG
16.160gal/836mi: 51.7MPG

To quote others before me, this car is amazing.

835.9 on 15.11gals

i was shooting for 900 mile club, but didn't quite make it. for some reason the low fuel light came on at 791.6 so i didn't want to chance running it all the way dry. it wasn't winter fuel, but it was B60, b/c i had 4.5 gals of B10 in the tank and added 12 gals of B80.

i'm running on regular diesel that i got in Taos, NM now so i'm assuming that winterized. i have to drive back to Omaha from here, so there's a change i'll make 900 on the way home. we'll see.

I am in. At 811 miles I put fuel in from the can I was carrying. I am not sure if I could have made it to my preferred fuel stop. I did not want to find out for sure. When filled it up it came out to 50.4 mpg. I have an 04 Jetta with 5spd. When I filled up it was the 1st time I have seen ULSD stickers. I will be interested if that will make a difference on the next tank. I run mostly B20. The pump has big nozzles, so I top it off with D2 at a different station with the small nozzle. I drove slow..............

That was September...It's only $3.19 now in Portland, second highest in nation behind Hawaii... I paid $3.79 in late August.
Actually I paid $6.04 a gallon in Finland in October, so somehow I've stopped complaining at the fluctuations ;) My last tank was 52 MPG too on ~B60 (733 miles, 14.1 gallons).

728 people miles per gallon of petroleum

guess i get to bump this thread.

i made 801.0 before i dumped in the 5 gals on B100 that i was carrying with me. so technically i don't know what my MPG was since i didn't fill all the way up. however, i did notice i was at 742 when i dinged (fuel light came on). so vented = 16.5 topped all the way off, which i did before i started, minus 1.9 left at the ding = 14.6 used. that'd be 50.82mpg. not too bad, and i was carrying 600 lbs of people + luggage, on the way down and 820 lbs of people + luggage on the way back. 3*380 + 4*380 = 2660 / 14.6 = 182 people miles per gallon. best part... we were on B80 for the trip, so we got about 728 people miles per gallon of petroleum based fuel(assuming that some petroleum was used to make the methanol, which in turn was used to make the BioD). that's a lot of number crunching to make things seem more impressive, but i like to have that stat so i can compare it to the 116 PMPGOP that the other car in our caravan was getting.

PMPGOP, a new figure i'll have to start bragging about.

Two more recent 800+ tanks...

1/29-2/14/07: 840 miles, 15.003 gallons: 56.0MPG! (new record)

I wish I would have pushed it a bit further. I could have EASILY had a 900-mile tank. I wouldn't push it any further than that...I know I have the reserve to have pulled off a 950-mile tank, but I don't EVER let it get that low. No way am I going to run it dry and risk the pump.
----------------------------------
2/20-3/5/07: 818 miles, 15.757 gallons: 51.9MPG

I was doing really well until the weekend, when the idiots decided to close every meaningful freeway in my part of the Phoenix area. Getting anywhere in the ensuing mess involved lots of stop-and-go, many lights (every one of which I encountered seemed to be red), and lots of inconsistent speeds. I could have had 900 easily!!!!

the tank wasn't all highway either (iirc, about 2/3 highway) ! just careful driving, but still pushing it here and there to keep boost up and work the turbo!

Good job. Not too many PD's in the 800 club.

If I lived somewhere mote rural it'd be alot easier. I achieved the mileage I did by simply driving 63-65MPH all the time on the highway and trying to coast as much as possible. Luckily there weren't any accidents that caused jams or days where I overslept and had to haul azz to work. :D Not only is it a PD, but also a wagon! That last tank didn't even have any diesel Kleen in it. I'm going to try and make this a routine and see if I can steadily repeat it.
I had originally gone with 205/60-16 tires to try and make the speedo accurate and help economy by actually traveling more per given RPM but I think it hurts more than helps due to a taller ride height. My next set of tires will be 205/55-16...possibly P6 four seasons which claim to use their Extra Low Rolling Resistance compounds...and only wieghs 18lbs!

My wife asked me what the big deal was about going over 800 miles on a tank of diesel. I told her it was like climbing a tall peak and once you get to the summit, you wonder what's next. Maybe 900 miles? She just doesn't understand...

With my 2001 Golf, I almost always get better than 58mpg. I've gotten several tanks with over 1000 miles. During the summer months I can get to 950 miles before the low fuel light come on. I have over 166,000 miles on it now and going strong.

First 800+ mile tank (even though I was shooting for 1300+kms)...

820.0 miles on 15.894 gallons of B20. Next goal, 1400kms... hopefully this next tank'll get me there. I've got about 10 hours of driving this weekend, if I can stick to 100 on the 401 and 85-90 on highway 7 up to Ottawa I'll be close.

With my modifications-specific Günther-Tune, I am now regularly getting over 50 mpg and 800+ miles per fill-up with about 50/50 city/highway driving. It's very satisfying...

Yes, I resurrected a thread that hasn't had a post in 5 years.

I'm torn, I could get make it into the 800 mile club or fill up after 563 miles and get an all highway miles MPG...I think I'm going for the 800mile club... On a side note driving 65 for 250 miles was way harder than it should have been!
