diesel fumes in cabin

newbie tdi owner. 2003 5 speed. upon startup and while defroster or heat on diesel fumes entering cabin. any thoughts?

Cabin pressure vent in LR wheel well stuck open or damaged?

I would check to see if you have any exhaust leaks anywhere first. Including under the hood.

also, take a look at the hatch seal - maybe sure that everything is seated properly.

Check the EGR flex pipe area.

all good ideas... check these, likely one of them is indeed your problem.

What does this cabin pressure vent look like in the wheel well?

Could also be the flex section in the downpipe...which is where mine is coming from. No worries...perfect excuse to install a 2.5" SS DP from tdiparts.com

my issue was the downpipe, one of the 3 bolts that holds it to the manifold had a nut that was seized halfway on it, thus resulting in the downpipe flange not being properly clamped against the manifold. Found this when I was replacing the downpipe... unscrewed the whole bolt from the manifold and placed a thick washer in front of it.

now i can have the cabin fan running on startup and idle and not smell any fumes
