One thing that stood out was :
Mueller said the company will have to fix the EA 189 diesel engine "in combination with various transmissions and country-specific designs. So we don't need three solutions, but thousands."
A software update will suffice to fix the problem in most cases, but some vehicles could need new injectors and catalyzers, Mueller was quoted as saying. He said the automaker may need to set up temporary specialist workshops to deal with the more complex cases.
I'm assuming that the more complex solutions would be needed to bring the US cars under compliance.

None!
I would need a deal on a Golf R around C$35k. I am feeling a degree of betrayal that only four wheel drive and 300 hp will cure. Also, a trip to Oktoberfest in Munich.

The 1st amendment really doesn't apply here, but there's no point in having a forum if everyone is going to just agree on everything.
Please forgive my Walter Sobchak moment.:D

Under no circumstances will I be selling my car back, unless forced by the government to do so or do an engine refit. My state does not require emissions on diesels (PA) so I'm gonna ride that one out as long as possible. I love my car to death and don't intend to give up on it.

the only thing would be another JSW manual with a diesel. & the same mpg as my 14.
2014 has 34 k & is 14 months old Avg. for the 34 k is 45.7 mpg.
Just came back from a 596 mi trip. Avg. speed 68.7. Avg. mpg 46.3 :D

BTW here's a link to a thread which has a the economics of owning a TDI

posted by me when I bought my 2012 Jetta sedan which I traded in on the wagon.

Doing trade in I ended up with 1 more year of payments @ $40.00 LESS per month.

Since 2012 I have saved 60k from being put on DMAX.

I wrote an open letter to VW about this. I covered it all I think.

As for a buyback price, $5000 over what I paid. I'd do that. And I think my replacement vehicle would be a Sprinter, Ducato, Transit or Ram Eco-Diesel. All cutaway chassis and all diesels. And then I'd build my minimalist tiny house on it and call it a life :).

Something seems off between those two numbers of $12K vs. $3K.

How did you come up with the $12K?

From ArsTechnica: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/10/volkswagen-pulls-2016-diesel-lineup-from-us-market/

"Horn testified that the 2016 vehicles were equipped with the same type of software that allowed millions of VW diesel vehicles to cheat pollution tests. "As a result, we have withdrawn the application for certification of our model year 2016 vehicles. We are working with the agencies to continue the certification process," Horn told the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations."

Lots and lots to fix.. :(

I think when Mr. Horn refers to "inventory" he's talking about cars at dealers, not in owners' hands. No, a buyback isn't happening. Never was, IMO.
