Congrats! Nice to see that these are going smoothly. Mine is Jan 13th. I'll be unloading in the street out front if that's what they want.

HPFP failure

Hi All,
Not sure if anyone can help. Looks like the HPFP on our 09 Jetta TDI has just given up the ghost. The car has 125k on the clock so out of the extended warranty as well  Our return date for the car has been set for the end of January so somehow we need to get the car running (limping) to the VW shop under it's own steam.
We did take the car to a VW "specialist" and he told us it was a HPFP failure. The car turns over but won't start, does anyone know of anyway we could get the car going it we towed it closer for a short 100 yards drive to the VW centre so that we can return the car without having to spend $1000's on repairs just to return it???? One suggestion was to bypass the solenoid????
I have a feeling this is going to be painful.

Dave, sorry to hear about the failure. There are other threads on here with the same dilemma. At a minimum, I would guess you will need to buy a used HPFP and have the injectors and fuel system cleaned to get it to run. Search for the other threads and see how they handled the problem.

Here's one: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=468549&highlight=hpfp+failure

Thanks for that aja888, I read the thread and seems like I'm going to have to get it repaired before it goes back to VW :-( I'll keep looking to see if anyone found another solution.

Good luck Dave. When the HPFP shreds itself, metal debris goes all over the fuel system and injectors. It won't start because the fuel rail pressure is sensed as too low. I believe KERMA Tdi (member here and Vendor) has a service to clean the injectors. New injectors are expensive.

Thanks again. The added problem for me is that I work overseas and don't get the time to work on the car when I get home. Oh to be able to get this car running just long enough to get it returned. Any idea what they are doing with these bought back cars?

Buyback completed! I towed it actually into the dealership on a tow dolly. I parked next to the building and unloaded it. There were no windows on the side I parked, so nobody actually saw me unload it. I drove it around front and parked it. The specialist was on lunch when I came in. So she hadn't seen the vehicle yet. I told her the car had some damage right off the back. She was giving me a hard time at first. Saying I needed info from the accident and that they were told not to take certain cars back. I then started showing her the court documents, stating that condition didn't matter...needs to run under it's own tdi, price is frozen to last years value...blah blah blah. I also stated that I was advised by the hotline team more then once, that if the car drove under it's own power, it was good to go. She Imessaged someone on here phone for a few minutes, and then asked for the keys. This was actually the first she looked at the car. LOL, the look on her face. She started taking pictures of everything. She was really fascinated by all the blown airbags(that I actually cut out, but the wheel and headliner were destroyed). She finally started the car and took pictures of the mileage and it running. After a few more minutes of chatting on her phone and pushing from me... We finally proceeded. I actually got the receipt email before I filled out the paperwork. Once everything was filled and I had my copies... I was on my way.
The moral of this story is... Don't take no for an answer! They are being told different things, but not the facts. The court documents are there for a reason and to keep problems from happening.
Oh! I also got more money, because my mileage was 22,789 instead of the projected 30,000+.
Last picture before leaving the house...

Glad to know it went so well! I am still waiting - they asked for proof of purchase a few weeks ago and then emailed that my documents were complete again and they were deciding "if you are eligible." Unlike you, I did not wait until after the September deadline to settle with insurance, so am a little worried they will say it does not qualify.
Totaled between June 28 & Sept 15 but not given to insurance = ok, qualifies, per settlement lawyer. (I kept car & applied myself for salvage title mid summer)
But VW may parse that sentence to say Totaled = totaled.
We'll see.

I definitely had no desire of dealing with totaling the car and getting the salvage title and all that. So, glad I just held onto it and took care of it the way I did. I got my Chase email last night and this morning I am $7633 richer after loan payoff.

Got my offer letter today, so they saw the salvage title (Rebuilt in WA state). Friend came over & we hammered out the bumper & hood so I could open it, charge the battery and put on a trickle charger in case it takes another couple months to get appt. Drove it around the block - it drives great! Not street legal, tho - no headlight, just a big hole in that corner of the car.
Waiting til we can get notarized then will upload, then wait for appointment.

So, long and short of it is...wife was t-boned Decenter 15th (not her fault) and repair facility says it will be totaled. Damaged entire drivers side of the vehicle to include side impact airbags. Doors open and close and no broken glass but the "frame" is tweaked. Starts and drives per the body shop. I just read all 17 pages of this blog and it seems the bottom line is that if I can drive it in, VW will take it back. We had set up our buyback appt. the day before the accident which is Jan. 18th. Any other success stories regarding turning in a wrecked vehicle? Also, should I contact anyone at VW and tell them it is wrecked before showing up to the appointment? Thanks.

I know DanB36 just did this and it worked out well for him. I wouldn't bother calling VW as they're generally useless based on 100% of the posts about people who called. Make sure you retain title/car and go from there. Dan might be able to give you more advice on when to process the claim with your insurance company, but I assume all of this varies by state laws.

I did. Car was sandwiched (rear-ended, pushed into the car in front of me), radiator was leaking, but it started and drove without issues. Put my insurance claim on hold until after I turned in the car, just in case. Had the car towed to the VW dealer, and they took it back without issue. Just got the insurance payment today. See http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=468293 for more of my story.

I wouldn't.

Drove the car home and parked it. Now just waiting till my buyback date to cruise it on over to VW. Can't wait to see the look on their faces when they have to deal with this.

took my 2010 jetta in today to have it bought back and they denied it. it was wrecked in the front end in july. insurance totaled it and we "bought it back from insurance" car now has a salvage title. runs and drives under its own engine power just fine but does have a busted radiator. they said the cars can not have any damage. but the vw website say under any condition. not sure on what to do now.

Successfully turned our 2009 Jetta in this morning. Waiting on the EFT email, but we have a VW sale receipt.
The only question the (extremely nice) buyback person asked about our smashed up car was "does it drive?"
We said, yes, we drove it in. She said, good, we can drive it onto the tow truck then, yes? We said yep. We didn't mention that we'd driven it OFF a tow truck a block away (it's not street legal so we didn't take any chances).
She did not take pictures. She did not comment on the rebuilt title. She did not want to see the registration or the purchase documents that we had uploaded. Called the title "a clear title" so I guess that refers to loans.
We got $500 more than our buyback letter.
Then we talked about the snow this morning and signed the papers and got our reciept.
After all that anxiety it went super well.
Thanks to DanB36 esp for the encouragement and example, and to everyone on this forum for the advice, sharing, and information.
