Hello Guys,

Sorry my first post is asking for advice, it's not what I'd planned.

TDi 130 PD. Difficult to start when cold and won't start when hot. No warning lights on dash.
2 days ago was achieving 56 mpg ave on tootle to work and back, yesterday morning a sluggish start and driving to work mpg down to 44 and lumpy when accelerating but okay when at speed.

Read through forums decided coolant temp sensor was a good start, changed it today and no different. Also 2 Weeks ago had new Fuel Filter, ran with no problems.

Read some more and decided to check ASV on EGR, undid the Hose and peered inside, the 'butterfly' valve is open and although it has goo around it doesn't look too bad, so I moved the rod to close the valve and close it did, actually I did it a few times and could hear what sounded like air escaping form an area to the right of the EGR cooler which had a load of small hoses and valves , though I could pin it down from exactly where as it's stuffed full of small tight bending hoses etc; could this be relevant ?

When cranking the engine cold, the engine seems to fire, the rev counter needle stays at 0 for a second or two before moving to around 800 rpm, if I then hit the accelerator pedal I can keep the car going. When hot sometimes is just flickers from 0 and doesn't make 600 revs and hitting the accelerator pedal doesn't make any difference as the car just dies. No beeps, warning lamps etc, drives okayish, no real pep to it and mpg is way down.

Anyone help please ?

Thanks, Mark.

A scan for fault codes might be useful, sometimes it shows nothing but other times it tells you exactly what's wrong.:)

Hello Seatman, thanks for reply.

It has been scanned today at specialists using Snap On software, it showed no error codes.
Head scratching going on, they are going to remove engine cover etc to check timing and everything as it should be on that side. They have ruled out Fuel Filter, Starter Motor, Battery, Temp Sensor, MAF, EGR and ASV so far.

Waiting for news :(

Mark.

Do you have the 109 relay in that car? I can't remember if you do or not but if you do it could be part of the problem as it supplies the juice for the ecu and they're quite common to causing starting problems.:)

Problem sorted, so thanks to all who replied, well errr.........Seatman :)
Seatman, the crankshaft pulley was almost hanging off screwing up timing etc etc. So new pulley, tensioners, waterpump and belt and now it's flying.

Thanks,
Mark.
