Locking car from cargo door 2015 GSW

I haven't figured this out yet, sometimes when I close the cargo door the car locks, sometimes it doesn't. There is a little diagram that shows to close it with your hand flat but it is still inconsistent for me, what am I missing?

What I have noticed is that if the car is locked, and you open the cargo door and then close it it will lock the whole car again. If your car is unlocked and you open the cargo door, the car will not lock.

If that makes sense.
