Hi everyone, this is my first post here and I'm a complete newbie when it comes to mechanical stuff, so I could really use your help.
First, the history. The car is a 2002 VW Golf MK4, 1.9 TDI, 90BHP, with a ALH engine. I've been experiencing loss of power issues with it for the better part of the year and I've been to 3 repair shops, all of them decided they either don't know or don't want to repair whatever is wrong. So I decided to take things into my own hands because it's getting ridiculous trying to find a mechanic that will fix the damn thing.
So what I know is that water has been taken out of the intercooler on 2 occasions. The symptoms, including loss of power, white smoke, rough idle, coughing, seemed to accentuate after heavy rains and/or whenever I filled the screenwash tank. Also, the last shop I went to gave me the following error codes:
- 17564 - manifold pressure sensor
- 17664 - coolant temp sensor
- 16485 - mass air flow sensor
- 17964 - charge pressure control
What I've done so far:
- took the screenwash tank out, it doesn't leak, I'll also check the hoses to see if they might leak into the intercooler somehow
- cleaned the mass air flow sensor
- cleaned the manifold pressure sensor
- cleaned the EGR valve
- took out the intercooler, it's cracked, waiting for the replacement now
What I plan to do:
- replace the intercooler
- replace the coolant temp sensor
- take the car back to a shop to see if the error codes are still there
- maybe check the injectors if the above doesn't fix the problem
What I need help with:
When I took the intercooler out, there was quite a lot of oily gunk accumulated in the lower part of the duct and some water on top of that. The gunk was a mixture of oil and dirt as far as I could tell. Now, obviously, with the intercooler cracked water and dirt is quite natural and I know some oil is acceptable. But please look at these images and let me know your thoughts.
.
.
Is it normal to have oil leaking from the CCV hose?
Why is there oil dripping down that duct?
What duct is that? Does that go into the turbo? And is the flow through that from the turbo to the intercooler?
Should I take that out as well, check for cracks or maybe some seal not holding? Do I have access to it if I remove the wheel and the plastic wheel "cover"?
I'm a bit reluctant to put in the new intercooler when there's oil everywhere So please give me some advice about what I can do to make sure the new intercooler doesn't clog up again. Thanks a lot!
