Did an auto to 02J swap for a guy. Used trans, no info on it.

1-4, R works. new cable end links, did the factory alignemnt method.

5th gear feels good and engages nice at idle. I can select it, either drag the clutch/creep the car or stall the engine.

Does not engage while driving. Doesnt "feel" there, and when i let the clutch out it grinds and essentially pops out. As though the selector ring is barely hovering over the gear lock.

Bad synchro?

Your symptoms do point to a worn/damaged synchro.

Careful removing the gear/ hub assembly- they are on tight and you can easily chip the teeth

Check the bushings under the shifter knob/shaft. Both alh's I've had, had the little bushings on the cable ends fail. I cut a piece of vacuum hose both times, and it worked flawlessly. Still running tge same tubing for i'd say no less than 70k miles without problem.
