The only reason we did not buy a 2009 Passat wagen ot Tigaun was that I could not get a diesel. That's the primary reason I buy VW products. Went with a CR-V for a little less than the Tigaun and don't need to feed it premium.

3.6 VR6 is a good engine. I get up to 30 mpg in mine on open road and i have 4motion. When it first came out I read reviews that it to much power w/o 4 motion.

We never know for sure. Why? 'Cause we don't yet know the overall gearing for both Passats yet.
Being as the Passat is a little bit heavier, VW may screw with the gearing . . who knows?

We do know what the official EPA rating is for the Passat 6 MT. It is higher than the Jetta
Golfs because I think it is tuned better for F E account of the Ad Blue fluid.

Those EPA figures can be easily beaten as I have proven with my '10 DSG equiped JSW.
See my Fuelly below

No doubt there. Only time I am below EPA rating is when I am towing a trailer.

Local dealer has a loaded TDI Passat, 33K sticker price.
That is true but they are NOT for sale. Every dealer in the US got 2 (one 2.5L SE and a TDI) for test drive purposes only.

Ditto.

2.5liters will be flogged and incentivized to death...their resale will be awful....4-5 dollars a gallon i dont see a decision really....get a cheap place to do your DSG oil change and get a diesel....you will be in a torquier car with great performance in the mountains and great mileage....project 3 -4 yrs down the road the 2.5liter will be gathering dust in the used car lots....the TDIs as they always have will be the HOT resale item....lees dollars overall more performance and fun....who cares about a little optilube...keep in garage and fill after you fill....its your money but I think that is a mistake.

With all due respect...I believe he is mistaken. He appears to be a shop foreman at a VW dealership and may be unaware that these are for test drives only and not for sale.

Ditto here, too. I guess VW thinks the JSW and Passat Wagon are too similar to justify offering both. With as many Volvo and Subaru wagons I see around, though, I'd think they be well served to offer it. The Passat Wagons may be able to compete with minivans, too, since gas is going so high. Offer a diesel Rhoutan that goes into the 30 mpg range, and that would be stellar as well.

I'm curious how a "new" Passat TDI will fit in the current lineup. My B4 has a shorter wheelbase than the new Jetta. So will the "new" Passat be longer than the "new" Jetta? Also I pray VW offers a manual tramsmission in it and doesn't relegate the best TDI ever made to forever slushbox since '97.

Best TDI (engine) ever made is subjective but my all-round favourite would probably be the V8 TDI and the all-aluminum R5. I lament that both are slated to disappear. The aluminum, gear-driven R5 with modern injection system, 4V head, 2-stage turbocharging and further weight optimization would have been a truly great engine.
