Just pull it out. Sometime don't feel like filling up at the station and dump red in there from aux pump. Pops right out.

My 2012 JSW had the dealer recall installed guard. It was a real PITA to use with anything other than the correct automotive diesel filler nozzle. I didn't see the recall instructions until after I yanked it out of there in a rather medieval fashion.
First, broke the white plastic lock ring into two pieces, yanked out pieces.
Then crushed the actual locking assembly, pulled it out in 3 pieces.
Finally, pried down stainless springy tail of metal flap, grabbed with needle nose vise-grip, twisted and pulled it out.
I feel so much better now that fueling from a plastic jug in the home garage out of the weather will be effortless & clean.

2014 Jetta wagon, removing this is a snap. If you have the filler that looks like this video from the factory, all you need is a bent-tip pick. I did mine in less time than this video runs, just give a sharp tug and it is out.

Yeah, necro thread.

Thanks for the video. I've been cursing that guard for 6 years each time I add my Power Service Diesel Kleen to my fuel. Now? Yeah, baby.
